Hi guys

After a few hundred miles on my newly acquired ST1100X (non ABS) I want to adjust the rear shock to soften the rear suspension a little.

Does anyone know what size of C Spanner is needed? Is there a generic spanner that will work or does it have to be a Honda tool?

Many thanks

Steve

Hello Steve:

I looked the part up in the catalog for you, but the size is not given in the part description.

It costs USD$7 (seven bucks), in case you want to order one from your local dealer. Even with inflated prices and high VAT, I can't imagine your dealer would charge you more than £10.

Sometimes you can find complete ST 1100 toolkits for sale on eBay for very low prices. There's a few tools in the Honda kit that are very useful to have, such as this pin spanner and the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdrivers, for use on all the bolts that look like they are Phillips head but are actually JIS.

That's brilliant Michael many thanks! I notice you live in Toronto (as well as Zurich) both great places to live, I grew up in Brampton as a kid, lived in Canada until I was about 9 years old! Thanks again, Steve

The hook spanner in the OEM tool kit requires the sleeve extender in the kit to get enough leverage to adjust the preload setting. You could order both those parts, and/or get one of the double-ended hook spanners available elsewhere, like bicycle shops (Google is your friend). At home I have used one of those on my ST1100 as it’s much easier to use, on the shock AND the steering bearing locknut. I put one in the STOC loaner Steering Bearing R&R Tool Kit:

Excellent point John.

I've added the part number for the sleeve extender to the catalog illustration ("Handle, Eye Wrench, 12 mm" in Honda-speak). Price is USD $3.
