Clerk at gas station

I cross the Canadian/American border almost on a weekly basis. With a modular helmet and a dark shield on it, I put up the shield well in advance of the crossing. Once in a while, the border patrol will ask me to take off my prescription glasses if it's sunny out and they go progressively tinted. Never have I had to take off my helmet.

I have a Nexus card and use a dedicated lane to cross the border both ways and for me it's 50/50 as to being asked to remove my helmet by US agent. I have a Symax modular helmet and always flip it up and remove sunglasses. US guy pointed to a camera in his kiosk and told me they are now using facial recognition software and the helmet can interfere with this. Nexus cards have a photo and the application process captures your fingerprints and an iris scan as well for airport use.

A small convenience store near my cottage had a sign telling motorcyclists to remove their helmet and if you went into the store with your helmet on the owner would assume that were there to rob him. Consequences weren't indicated, but I kind of assumed you'd get to see his rifle or shotgun if you stupid enough to disregard his instructions or were unlucky and never saw the sign.

I wonder how would gas station clerks approach a large bunch of Harley riders with dust mast covering their face. Bandanas on their head, full chain wallets. And full tattoo's including big tear drop one percenter moniker. Bet they would be quiet as a church mouse.

No doubt there are still places where it's perfectly legal to brandish deadly weapons and threaten someone for the heinous act of not removing a helmet.

How many people have been asked to leave their helmet at a courtesy desk or someplace and not carry it in the store ,I have had it a couple of times and always ask for a $1500 receipt for it .

I was surprised the other day after passing through security at a courtroom the guard told me I had to leave the helmet with him so it couldn't be used as a weapon. Thinking about it, I decided that made sense. Later I went to the Social Security offices and their security let me keep the helmet but I restrained myself from using it as a weapon during the visit anyway.

Yeah, I had a Walmart receipt checker tell me I had to leave my helmet with my bike, couldn't carry it into the store. I chuckled and kept walking. Nobody chased me down, so either I am ugly and intimidating or it wasn't really a thing.

The issue I usually run into, is the clerk has no idea they need to speak up so I can hear them through earplugs and a helmet. In the end, as frustrating as it sometimes is, I just take my helmet off. Even if all I needed was an understandable 15 second conversation.

I try to remind myself not to get upset. I'm the only one who will get upset...the clerk will just forget me and write me off as a total jerk. It's not worth getting upset.

I normally never go in, just pay at the pump with my helmet on and ear plugs in.
Just got a Fitbit pay smartwatch, so I won't even need to pull out my credit card. Just put my watch up against the scanner. Maybe go back to sitting on the bike while filling up.
Some stations won't let you sit and your bike filling up as its against company policy.

Well a “mask” (and a helmet might be argued/considered one if used to disguise), is legal unless used in a crime to disguise....

California Penal Code Section 185 PC: Wearing Mask Or Disguise To Evade Police
Wearing a mask or disguise in order to avoid police detection is a misdemeanor offense that is punishable by up to 180 days in jail, community service or community labor, costly court fines and any other conditions of probation that a judge may impose. In addition, the defendant could still be prosecuted for the underlying crime for which they were trying to avoid detection.

PENAL CODE - PEN
PART 1. OF CRIMES AND PUNISHMENTS [25 - 680]

( Part 1 enacted 1872. )

TITLE 7. OF CRIMES AGAINST PUBLIC JUSTICE [92 - 186.34]
( Title 7 enacted 1872. )

CHAPTER 8. Conspiracy [182 - [185.]]
( Chapter 8 enacted 1872. )

[185.]
Section One Hundred and Eighty-five. It shall be unlawful for any person to wear any mask, false whiskers, or any personal disguise (whether complete or partial) for the purpose of:
One—Evading or escaping discovery, recognition, or identification in the commission of any public offense.
Two—Concealment, flight, or escape, when charged with, arrested for, or convicted of, any public offense. Any person violating any of the provisions of this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.

Not me, but with all the crap going on in the country & world right now I am not surprised ..
We have had women " I guess they are women" with the full burka covers everything wanting
to get a drivers lic. and have the photo with full coverage.....

I stopped for gas on the way to work and went inside to get a receipt. I was told by the clerk that by law I am to remove my helmet so that my face will be visible to the camera. Has anyone else heard this before?

Near me Costco is the only place that will have an NFC payment option. I'm looking forward to that. No other stations yet that I know of. I'd like to see ARCO start. They make 35¢ off of debit cards (my preference instead of my credit card) so they may not change. I'm always on the lookout for contactless payment.

I'd have no reason to assume otherwise. I'm not sure of the relevance of your comment but there've been several attempts nationwide to try to get a license pic taken with full coverage. I don't know of any that have succeeded and I think there was a case that went to SCOTUS. Don't know the ruling if any.

I have only once been asked to remove my full face helmet in a super market fuel station and I refused but I did say when they ask people to remove there burqa's and if they did I would remove my helmet, the manager who was called agreed with me we both agreed it was discrimination against us !!

Full face? Never. It always comes off entering any store or station. I do carry it with me into the store if I don't have a place to lock it on the bike.
Modular? I have kept it on a time or two, but only in rare instances.
I consider it a nuisance and it can be impolite or disrespectful to others to try to interact with them with a helmet on and in my case, with ear plugs in.

I've always had to remove my fullface helmet and sunglasses coming back into the US....heading into Canada not.....ff

You showed remarkable restraint. Every time I've dealt with a government agency lately, I've felt compelled to look for a weapon to brandish!

I don't leave the helmet with the bike either. Most of the time I turn it backwards and stick it on top of my head to keep my hands free for products and payment. My kids hate it. They say it makes me look like a cone-head. I do get weird looks but don't care (or maybe I just want the attention?)
