Hi all, first post,first problem.
I have just got a 1992 st and despite its age I'm delighted that the only issue is the digital clock, it's a little funky and temperamental, I have three options on ebay but none are 92, pretty close though, should I take a punt on one despite the year? They look the same at least.

They are all the same.

It could be your battery.

Does the clock reset to 12:00 or 1:00 when you start the bike? If so, your battery is most likely circling the drain.
If you put a DVM on it , it should not go below about 10 volts when the starter is operating.

The ST1100 clocks in my experience either work or don't work.
If it is doing flaky stuff it is more than likely the battery as was said.
