Larry, call or contact Fred H on GL1800riders. He has relevant recent personal experience with knock sensor ECU repairs. The repair is $300. I know you used to be a member on that site from some old posts of yours and you might remember Fred. I’m on that site nearly daily and I am not familiar with owners commenting on failed repairs. It’s worth going beyond the experience of some stranger selling a Goldwing. I know you really like to help people and if there’s new information that you’re not familiar with you’re selling yourself short.

This topic keeps coming up, and it saddens me that a great bike like the ST1300 (and the GW1800) got no support from Honda for this issue...or if it did I've not seen it. It's the main reason I won't buy a 1300. I sure hope someone figures it out other than a band-aid. Until then, I'll continue riding my non-FI ST1100. Good luck gents.

I did direct him to contact Fred, and gave him links to our forum about the ECU issues and Codes etc.
I urged him to contact Fred, in an attempt to try and come up with a fix for his ECU and provide more information about this issue for both Wing groups, as well as ST groups.

For something that shows up 10-20 years later and still pretty rare. 1100 st's sold between 2003 and 2007.

If 11 of those 1100 were defective (and I think there are more than that reported just in this forum), that's a 1% failure rate...not insignificant to me. And that is not their only Achilles heel. I like simplicity.

They are showing some early good success with the repairs on the GL1800 site but only time will tell if it is a fix or a band-aid. If the repairs last and the bike runs at it should and not revert to base timing as it does then it’s a win.

It would be great if a fix was discovered. If my ECU fails, my plan is to repin and install a newer ECU. The one thing that separates the Asian markets from American markets is they reuse products across a large range of their vehicle production. Although the connectors for the ECU are different the pins are the same and the connectors are readily available.

There are a couple of wires that are different among the 2 ECUs. I know you cannot swap engines between the 2 bikes but most of the engine components are the same part numbers.

Larry beat me to it... I may be wrong, and frequently am, but I am not aware of ECU issues on the '07 and later 1300s.

My 2005 ST1300, that I put 174.3K miles on and since 2013, my son has put another 20K miles on it, has not had any ECU issues.
My 2004 ST1300, that has 77K miles (46K are mine) has not had any ECU issues.
My 2004#2 ST1300, that I put over 50K on and have no idea of actual mileage, (the speedo was missing), never had a ECU issue.

I have this AZ05, with over 59K miles, and no ECU issue.
The AZ06 ST1300P has over 74K miles and no ECU issue. And I'm hanging onto the ECU, just incase the 04 or AZ05 come up with one.

Yes, I have. That was until I moved here and during winter I fill it with 88 non Ethanol. When I'm out riding, I still put 91 in it.

It's my guess that many ECU failures are related to consistent use of regular gas.

That was my experience. I used to use regular gas and it developed the dreaded knock sensor code. After some time I started using premium fuel and eventually noticed that the FI light went away and hasn't returned since. <shrug>

You're right, thanks. Mine is a 2008, and I didn't know about failed ECUs until after I had bought it.

I appreciate that owners are still collectively trying to rationalize and hopefully one day, resolve the ecm's 25/26 problem. My 2012 (119k km's) and my 2004 (241k km's) have yet to throw those codes. Both bikes have heat mitigation mod's, and although the 2012 does run warmer than the 2004,, both seem reasonable to me, heat wise, given our local climate. I should mention that the 2004 had the recall grounding fix installed at about 60k km's. I believe that the Goldwings of the same age had a similar recall kit available. So Honda was concerned about enhancing the grounding, both at the yellow multi block on the main harness,,, and at the pink diagnostic connector (under the rear upper tank, close to the pair solenoid). I think that particular st13 recall was limited to 2004 (maybe 2005) and older. Just wanted to add my experiences to the collective,, cheers,,, CAt'

Facts matter not guess's so fact is my 2006 ST1300 was ran 412,500 miles on regular low octane with ethanol gas before it had it's first Code 26 error.

Based on that fact fuel type does not have an effect on the bike electronics.

is that knock module # the same for a st1300?
