Coldest Ride 2017-2018

It was 60F this morning and I even got wet today! It rained for about 5 minutes of my hour+ commute! Dry when I got to work! ;)

Of course, there are places where winter never seems to end.

Sept 30

23F
Coming out of Whitehorse, YT after a ride up to Fairbanks and Valdez.

Was that temp for about an hour.

Roads were bare and dry.

We didn't get any snow until the next morning, Oct 1, coming out from Fort Nelson, BC. Dash fluctuated between 2C and -2C for about two hours. Had snow for about an hour of that time. Luckily the roads were warm enough to remain wet and the only accumulation was in the ditches.

Electric vest, heated grips, other items on for layers.

All the road signs say cars and trucks have to have chains and/or winter tires from Oct 1 - Apr 30. Luckily there was no mention of this requirement for motorcycles.

On my way to STOC-toberfest we started the day 10/3/17 at 28 degrees in Pinedale, Wyoming. Yes Dan, I had on my heated socks, pants, jacket and Oxford heated grips. Your -25 will never have to worry about me breaking that!
My buddy had on my heated gloves. I felt sorry for him. He was on a Mutistrada. He only had a heated vest and heated glove liners that were too small for him.
We probably rode 100 miles in Idaho in rain and snow getting to Salmon Idaho on 93. Most of that was at 32 degrees.
It was 11 days and 4,500 miles of a great trip out west.

In SC a few days ago (and I wanted to try out me new heated vest- Tourmaster Synergy 2.0)- 51 degrees and when I got back 2.5 hrs later, it was 62 out. Heated gear is the best- I never had it but now I can ride all winter down here. Heated grips on the 94 as well (but not on the 2000).

Also had on summer gloves, my Neotec, and an MC denim jacket (I don’t recall the brand)

37° run for an hour this morning into the office. Broke out the winter jacket (Thanks Rick! DR1954) Didn't plug in the electrics (jacket / gloves) but I had them on with me.

The number of bikes on the parking lot is dwindling, I was the only one at my building, winter weather is in the air.

All, please don't hesitate to correct me for any mistakes I make in the first post list. Lots of 'opportunity' for me to make a mistake. ;)

Just caught on to this thread, and I will be participating for sure - looks like freezing temperatures will be required to make the cut. Early season rides (I was out in april) were certainly below that, dut dang if I remember particulars. October 22nd saw 41F. I'm pretty sure I have ridden in colder (36-38F) temperatures this fall, but again, I wasn't particularly paying attention - riding when it's cold is just normal for me!

OK, thought I'd start another coldest ride game, with fewer (no) rules. Essentially, just post the lowest temp you've ridden in for more than a few miles for the 2017-2018 winter. Extra details would be nice, but not required, i.e. gear worn, where you went, etc. I'll post the names and temps of the top 10 in this first post, as they are generated.

I'll start... I rode 27 miles to work yesterday morning and it was 46°F when I started. Didn't pull out my electric gear yet, just wore my Tourmaster Transition 4 jacket and Caliber pants, with liners.

Ride safe and stay warm out there. [emoji6]

RocketMan - 23°
okckeith - 28°
JRob - 31°
FieSTa45 - 31°
TorontoRat - 31°
Drrod - 34°
sirepair - 34°
carpdm - 37°
DavidR8 - 37°
drtyrrel - 37°

All temps in Fahrenheit.

My coldest so far this year was 2 weeks ago on the way to work. It was 36 when I left the house and 27 going through the state park about 1/2 way to work. It was not bad though as I had on my stitch with a heated jacket under it.

Before that it was in late June on Beartooth pass..

Jimbo and I coming back from STOC-toberfest saw -4 C (25 F) when we started out from Fernie, BC on the morning of October 9th. I was cozy as I cranked up my Powerlet jacket and glove liners while Jimbo made do with his Klim snowsport jacket.

Warming up the STeeds outside the motel.

What's up with this cold stuff you guys are talking about? I started out this morning @ 54F! At lunch I went to the beach, which was at about 80F! Tonight's commute home will probably be in the mid 80F's!

I know, your thermometers must be off! :rofl1:

It got down to 46 while I was riding around the Shenandoah are, but got up to 58 as I got home. . . Beautiful.day for a ride. . Put around 250 miles on the ST:)

Today's 50 miles (25mi at 7am, 25mi at 7pm) was at 35f in and 33f back. I'm sure they will be much lower before Spring. I ride every day it's not actively snowing _and_ accumulating.

Using my winter bike, a 2015 Yamaha WR250R.
In my level 2 (of 4) warm weather gear.
I'll check back when it drops to the 20s.

Later,
Kent Larson in Minnesota
