Crack in alternator housing.

My 2000 honda ST1100 alternator has failed, question is would this crack in the housing have caused the failure?

Stator plates (steel) corroding...
Normally common in UK-ish climate/winter use...

New alternator is in. Started right up and is charging at 14.4 volts. Ready to ride now.
