I have never used a radar detector but plan to buy one for our ST1300. (two tickets in 6 months). The Escort Passport 9500ix looks like a good choice based on reviews, but I am confused about mounting it. I use an Autocom system that has a port for the detector, so I can get sound, but I am wondering if I will need to mount the unit so that I can read the display and it can point through the windshield, or if I can conceal it and still get all the information through the sound system. I think the question comes down to how good the voice prompts are, and if I lose sensitivity by putting it in a side pocket. Another concern is if it needs to be available so I can operate it. (I saw the thread that talks about under the nose cone mounting and that looks pretty good, and I understand I will lose lazer detection if I put it in a side pocket). While I am asking questions, how much chatter will the unit put through the speakers? I like listening to music! Thanks for your comments!

Stuffing the unit into or under any bodywork will of course defeat the laser detection, but some would argue that a laser alert is just a notification to pull over anyway. You'll have to be careful how far you bury and ix though as you could shield it's GPS antenna, which will need to have a fairly decent view of the sky. If you're going to to do something like that you might be better off with the 8500 x50, it has the same detector sensitivity as the 9500ix.

I run the 8500 in auto mode, in this mode it goes off and then in a few seconds it starts to mute and quickly stops going off all the time, this gives me a chance to slow down but I do not have to put up with the darn thing going off all the time.

I have the 9500ix and mounted it on a Turbo City left mount.

I found that the laser falsed all the time, I've had extensive discussions with Escort about this, including working with them on the Show Floor of CES and SEMA and it comes down to an engine noise situation. So....I turned Laser off.

Anyway, that aside there is a lot of info that is easy to understand quickly on the display, along with the voice prompts, so I like it there. If you were to bury the unit I am pretty sure you would compromise rear detection, but I cannot offer a real world evaluation of that opinion.

Since I purchased this unit 2 years ago (as a 9500i and then upgraded to the 9500ix) I have not gotten a ticket (knocking on wood) and in the land of photo cameras it is proving to be invaluable.

Oh, one other Cool Feature!!! After seeing a false about 3 times the unit learns it all by itself and blocks it. WAY COOL!!

Legalspeeding.com sells a compact sending unit that transmits a signal to a small helmet mounted LED that is very cool. No need to worry about read-out or audio signal, just hit the binders. Also has covers for unit and other hardware.
