I have a Bel radar detector. as far as I know it works like a charm. Very pleased..

however, today I rode to the Hallett Raceway from Norman, OK (the OK people know what I mean...) to watch the pros go zoom.

rural areas, zzzaaappppp Laser Alert! no sign of a LEO anywhere...

during my summer safari to Yellowstone, same thing in Wyoming.. Laser Alert!!! no LEO anywhere.

either they were so well hidden (not likely EVERY time), or, something set off a false alarm.

any ideas??

curious -

I think it's kinda like a fishfinder. It throws an image of a fish on the screen every once in awhile just so you'll think it's working even though there aren't any fish around, just to keep your interest up. Same thing with the laser detector.

I got the same thing from my 10 year old V-1. since I upgraded it, I don't get any of those yet (three months)
I always thought it was stray signals from towers or even satellites scanning topo features or some such.

I had a loose ground on my Detector years ago and whenever I hit my horn the LAser would set off.
By any chance was there an airport nearby? My 8500 goes off near airports mostly large ones but occasional small ones.
Also
EZ-Pass" booths set of my laser warning.

Hope this helps.

True for me too... I used to get lazer falsing when I hit the horn.
Also falsed a lot when I had it wired to a voltage source that was slightly less than others. I rewired it and fixed that one.

I've had occasional false alerts in the country on sunny days when driving under foliage that throws a mottled shadow on the road. My theory is that the mottled light imitates the laser pulsing and diffraction of the light though the small openings between the leaves slits out some IR light, fooling the detector. I've never had similar falsing in the open.

There are a few autos that use laser for parking assist and following distance warning. Also new style LED billboards and signs sometimes emit laser freq (infrared) and you get a hit. Bastids.

Yes, the Infiniti SUV's use a laser assit, so that will set off your detector. It happens to me too on occasion.

In talking with Mellow this weekend at WISTOC, he mentioned he had this happen with his Bel - he said it happens to him a lot (of course he rides 7-850 miles a day!), and he always looks for a microwave relay tower. The last time it happened across Southern Minesota - the tower was 5 miles away.

I haven't heard a peep from my Cobra yet, except in the city, where it wouldn't stop, but I never saw a friendly policeman/sheriff/trooper. I hope it works! :)

of course it could be Aliens - many of them do emit radar pulses, I'm told.

Laser Falsing

It is unusual to get false laser warnings. Some cars and other electronics put out more RF interference than others and that interference may cause a false laser alert when certain devices are used. Although rare, using the horn, windshield wipers, or accelerating, can generate RF interference in some vehicles. Does it do the same thing in other cars/trucks? New cell phones, new cars with laser adaptive cruise control, and the wind-shear equipment at some major airports can also cause false laser alerts.
If you are experiencing false laser alerts of this type, please call our Customer Service Department at 800-543-1608 and they will give you a repair authorization number and instructions on how to return to us. We will be able to make modifications to your detector that will help.

Has to be aliens then.

Radar uses microwave (radio frequency), LIDAR (Laser) uses light (infrared)- so a microwave won't set off the Laser alert.

(Or does the Bell have but one alert for both radar and Lidar? I'm not familiar, I run a V1.)

Huh...what adjustments? Turn down the sensitivity? Methinks I'd rather have a false here and there...

Their circuitry is susceptible to RF noise and noise on the power rails. I don't think it's necessarily the sensor falsing thinking the microwave energy is LIDAR. So their fix is likely adding some shielding or filter elements.

For the falsing on adaptive cruise laser etc. I don't know what that looks like to the digital sig proc they have vs. LIDAR. With laser I think your hope is you have a rabbit that got lit up and you're seeing some reflected energy. If you were the target it's probably too late.
