Fitting an Aocci GPS onto the Dash of the the ST1100-Y (UK spec)

Hi everyone,
I have an Aocci GPS that I would like to fit on to the Dash/Parcel shelf (see picture). My query is, is it OK to drill through this area for the bolts etc? The shelf is hollow as far as I can ascertain. Does anyone know any different?

You would probably need to put some reinforcement underneath because it is not really designed to support anything.
Another thought would be to make a bracket that attached to the nearby screws and then attached the GPS to that.
That way if you don't like the position, you can move it with no harm and holes.
Years ago there were dash shelves built that did that very thing.

The shape of the top of the 1100's dash looks like it might be sturdier than that of the 1300 which is also hollow. I put a bracket on mine that used the two factory screws on the top of the dash. But they screwed into to tabs that could break if the screws were torqued too much. That probably needs more reinforcement than the dash itself. That doesn't look like a thing with the 1100.

Using a somewhat wide base to spread the load would help along with large diameter washers underneath the dash. Keeping the weight of the assembly down and centering in above the mount would probably be a good idea. A lot of mounts I've seen on the top of the dash place the ultimate location forward of the mount closer to the rider. This would leverage the strain on the mounting points.

I always think twice, or more, before cutting holes. What happens if you decide you don't like it and want something else like a Carpuride or a Chinese GPS like UP has? Just askin'.
