Not to brag, but I haven't bought any bike parts this year... :coffee:

G'Day...

1°/4°C, overcast, heavy, pounding wind gusts...
Them crows seem to enjoy the conditions, performing some mid-air brake-dancing...

me caffeinating alone... ☕

ze GF is out on a NY brunch with one of her ex-coworker/female-friends...
any other gal I've encountered would have undergone a deep reprogramming during such "female face-time",
returning as completely different person, questioning all and everything, requiring like 2~3 months to straighten out again...
not ze GF... 😎
steady as she goes, like an ST1100, where per design "boring" is actually absolutely brilliant... 😁

Upon her returning we'll do an extensive grocery run, hosting guests tomorrow and she is motivated
to stink up the place with a hearty, opulent raclette... 🍽️

enjoy the handful of days left till we've to get back into the mines... 😎

Thx Martin!
«Steady as she goes!»,( was often yelled to me as a young helmsman….omg! That’s more than 40 years ago…)

Just around freezing, stone cold wind from north 30mph, sunny.

Been out buying some wine.
Heavy wind lately resulted in no shrimps.
So sushi for dinner.

Now to vacuum all the remains from far too many guests the last two weeks…
Who’s grumpy again?
Me.
Pfffft!

Have a good one!

Good morning everyone

Thanks for ze Kaffee, mein Herr.

It's 26°F and cloudy in Rockville but the wind has finally subsided- we've just 1 mph from the SSE. Evidently it's blown itself all the way to western Europe. Sorry, fellas. Partly sunny and a high around 37 are the call for the day.

Them crows seem to enjoy the conditions, performing some mid-air brake-dancing...

several years ago Mrs. Fun and I were in the "mountains" of Shenandoah National Park, where a brisk westerly breeze was blowing up the sides of the hills, providing lost of draft and lift. The local crows were having a blast, looping and tumbling and stalling out then being tossed back into the air. It had never before occurred to me that they might sometimes fly just for the joy of it.

a hearty, opulent raclette... 🍽️

Mmmmmmmmm, raclette. One of these days I'm going to treat myself to a raclette heater. Don't tell my cardiologist.

Having ruminated overnight, I think I'll take the two-piece top approach to recovering from my measurement gaffe on the bench. It's more work, but it preserves the final sheet of material in unaltered form, meaning that I might be able to return it if it continues to go unused for the remainder of the project.

So that's on the agenda for today, as is a trip to my favorite little independent battery dealer. The alarm on the UPS that protects Mrs. Fun's computer was screeching when I got up, and unlike episodes in the recent past powering it off and back on didn't resolve the issue so I think the battery is actually dead.

I may also have to resort to snaking the drain in our shower as a homeowner's chore: it's been very slow for two days now and resists all of the chemical approaches I've tried so far. Even though she usually uses a hair trap over the drain opening, it is inevitable that some of Mrs. Fun's hair gets through and goes down. As I have no hair left on my head except my full, luxuriant, almost flamboyant beard, I'm certain that the main culprit is her hair. It'll be a nasty, gooey, mess when it emerges, but a free4-flowing drain will keep peace in the family.

If the snake fails to do the trick, I'll have an excuse to buy that boroscope that I've been threatening for years to acquire for years.

Stay safe and well everyone and tell your dear ones you love them. Do it today, NOW, for tomorrow may be too late.

Good morning, and thanks for the coffee start, Martin.

It's partly cloudy and 10f out there this morning, going to 25f later. Winds of 10-15mph should make it feel colder.

Yesterday's snow amounted to ~4" of fluffy stuff. I shoveled off the deck, then broke out the snow blower to clear the sidewalks and driveway. The sun did its magic, and everything's clear, now. I did need some ice melt on one spot, and it looks like I'll be needing more at some point.

I didn't get out with the neighbor's dog, since the sidewalks on Main St hadn't been plowed, yet. They were coming by as I brought Freya's catfood over, before dinner. I'm going to have to bundle up, if I take her, today.

Brenda never did get to the grocery store, so that might be on the calendar for today.
I've decided to reengage with the gym NEXT week.

Enjoy the day,
Steve

Morning all, and thanks for the startup Martin.

It's a cold but sunny -15 here, with a nasty wind making it feel like -25. I was already out in it this morning taking the compost and recycling out to the curb. It should pop up to -11/-20 later on, not that it will feel much different when outside.

Luckily for Thing1, I decided I'd have to snow blow again before bed last evening, as looking out the windows show yesterday's lie. The 15cm they called for turned into 45cm. Had I not done the 2nd round last night he'd never have gotten out of the yard to go to work this morning.
I also snow blowed the entire road in front of the house, so that when the plow came down it didn't wing all the road snow into the end of the driveway making an impassable snow dam.

Here's a few snaps of this morning. The ground was bare when we went to bed New Years Eve..... 24hrs make a difference. Hopefully it helps the local ski hills.

I'm envisioning something like this, so you can take back the sheet of material, and the "legs", any time.... as long as you don't finish the surfaces.

Hope everyone has a great day and has a bit more color in their world than our white 'n greens.

Obo.

Thanks for the coffee Martin, Beyond Black is here as a backup.
I can't see using my massive coffee mug to drink coffee, because it would certainly be cold before I was half through. It reminds me much of the beer Stein used by Ulysses... but his was tied to the sea.
(Picture attached to yesterday's coffee thread.) My boss gave it to me for Christmas, said he immediately thought of me when he saw it. Understandable.
It had never before occurred to me that they might sometimes fly just for the joy of it.
Did you ever read Jonathan Livingston Seagull? Neil Diamond wrote the soundtrack for the movie, based on the book... I read it in high school a few minutes ago.
If the snake fails to do the trick, I'll have an excuse to buy that boroscope that I've been threatening for years to acquire for years.
The lady mower fixer uses one to inspect cylinders and pistons when she's repairing mowers, blowers and chainsaws. Her YouTube channel is @Chickanic, and she's really good. You can find a decent scope on Amazon for ~$40, and I've seen them at Harbor Freight as well.
Looks like really, really good chances for rain about the time I get off work, so looks like Kaiser won't ride with me today.
I'm going to work today, so some of you won't have to.
And I don't need alla you retired dudes rubbing it in, ok?

Good morning, everyone. Thanks for the start, Martin.

43/58, with afternoon showers. Can’t complain, since I’ll be doing household chores today.

Teddy and I went to a local park yesterday and watched folks fly their RC planes. It made me want to resurrect some of my planes that are stored, above the garage. Just what I need. Another way to blow through my retirement money.

@ibike2havefun I was shown a quick shower drain fix, by a lady that was cleaning my house. It’s so quick, that she does it during her usual tub/shower cleaning. Simply unscrew the drain cover and reach in with some 6”-8” hemostats and pull out the offending ball of slimy, disgusting, soap scummed ball of hair. Not recommended for the faint of heart, or those with weak stomachs. Looks like something Mike Rowe would do, but it works. Hemostats are cheaper than borescopes, and they still classify as a “new tool”.

I was already out in it this morning taking the compost and recycling out to the curb

Thanks for the reminder. that spurred me to get ours out, which was accomplished less than five minutes before the trucks arrived to collect the contents. Phew! I missed one a few weeks ago and still hear about it from Mrs. Fun.

Did you ever read Jonathan Livingston Seagull?

Yep, but as a work of fiction I didn't consider that it might have any basis in reality.

6”-8” hemostats

Oh yeah, that would probably do the job. And I could use the hemostats for other tasks where small clamps are required.

[EDIT: moments later, a set of hemostats are on their way from Amazon, due by midafternoon today. Thanks for the tip!]

Good morning, all. Coffee? Oh, yes please, and lots of it. The hotter the better.

We're looking at partly cloudy skies this morning and we should see the sun peeking through from time to time today. Alas, that won't be enough to provide any warmth. I wouldn't say it's "cold," exactly...no, I'd categorize it more as "effing cold." Shiver-me-timbers cold. Bone-chilling cold. Snotsicle cold. The current temperature reads -21°C/-6°F with a windchill of -27°C/-17°F. The day's high, if you can call it that, will be -15°C/5°F with a feels-like of -23°C/-9°F. I shall be brave and wrap myself up like a shivering mummy, first to take down the Christmas lights strung around the balcony railing and replace them with the white ones that live there the rest of the year, and then for my trip to the city centre to have dinner with friends this evening. So much for hunkering down under a blankie with a good movie and cup of tea!

Everybody have a good one, stay safe and go safely.

Patty

Good Morning Y'all, and welcome to day 2 of 2026. Cloudy 3 C high 7 C which is+3 degrees above normal for this time of year. Sounds like Patty is having weather Cold enough to Freeze the Canon Balls on the Brass Monkey, my Sister and her Husband met in the Navy, they explained the saying to me many years ago. Today's agenda, Pay rent, and pick up next cycle of Cancer killing Meds,oh yeah and cat litter.
Thx Martin for coffee. Happy New Day, G

Morning Martin & All from sunny, Southern Utah!

Currently it is 38F, up from 36F and heading for 49F. A slight breeze now, later the winds will be out of the W @ 6 to 7 mph. Still some threats of some rain or snow, but so far we have gotten very little of either. Although, checking my home weather station, it looks like we got another 0.01" of rain, last night! :well1:

I'm still recovering from that crud, but I'm feeling a lot better. I don't expect much happening again today.

Chris is still asleep, so we'll get something to eat/drink then. Pepsi(s) will be had later.

Anyone :dr13:, have a great day on the roads! :hat3:

That sounds, and looks, like a lot of real estate to cover. I remember last year, or a couple of years ago, you had a thread about your snowblower that you had bought. I seem to recall that you ended up buying a rather big one with all kinds of fancy options that you weren't to sure about whether or not you really want them but I don't really remember the details. How is that machine working out?

We had an ice storm here just a few days before the snow that we had on December 31st. It turned cold right after the ice storm and left a perfect coating of ice everywhere that is every bit as smooth and slippery as any ice skating rink. There are videos of kids skating on what should be roads. My tracked snowblower slid right off of the walkway on the side of the house and ran in to one of those garden hose guides that I leave stuck in to the ground in the garden and broke the shear pin. I ended up shoveling the rest by hand while trying not to fall and break my neck. Isn't winter fun!

Mine, a smaller, humbler machine, came with several spare shear pins. I keep a weather eye on where they are (a completely odd and nonsensical place, but one I can routinely monitor) as I'm certain to need one some day.

It’s me again…
Thanks Martin, for today’s start!
Happy New Year folks !
I think I’ll crawl back under my rock until spring!
I wrecked my right shoulder falling on our steep slippery driveway several weeks ago, only to destroy the left one New Years Eve!
I’m finding it difficult to clean off the snow.
The “Golden Years”, Pffft!

Well, that sounds like a bummer! Hope you can heal soon!

@Andrew Shadow I bought a Honda 32" tracked job, and it's now got 40 hours on it. I've pretty much got it figured out how to make it move effectively, given the controls are opposite my old one I had for 20+ years. Muscle memory wasn't my friend....

1767401156882.png
As for how it works, if throws well. I didn't think I'd like the electric chute controls, but I do. If I recall, you said you had to replace yours once. No shear pins on this as the system just disconnects the drive in the event of a jam. It's happened a couple of times. What i do like is the height adjust-ability of the clearing blades. Good for my tiny bit of gravel in front of the garage (still unpaved after 3 years or so....) as well as when I do around the house. I always cut a few paths around the house on the lawn. It allows me to get the genset to the power mast & Generlink hookup if the power goes out, allows access to the 2 basement bedroom windows, allows a deer path so they don't have to wade thru the deep snow, and it allows access to the house for firefighters in the event of an emergency. Nothing worse than trying to drag a charged water line in full turnout gear thru a couple feet of snow! I'd highly recommend folks clear a path around their home for just that kind of emergency situation. The bacon you save may be your own.....

As for the ice, we got it when we were out of town just before Christmas, but when we got home it had been mostly a rain event here.

I did have to go out again around lunch time and do a final cleanup from the storm, which is when I did the paths around the house and a secondary path the road.
