I'm in the process of getting a new(er) GPS since the NUVI 785s I have are causing me too much grief!

So, I'm looking to pick up either a brand new ZUMO 660LM, or a refurbished ZUMO 665LM. Price for each will be close, so cost is not the issue.

Those with these GPSs, does the XM make that big of a difference, the 665 is better? Does the weather only work on the 665 and does it work very well?

Also a question to you all is, those of you that have bought Refurb'd Garmin ZUMO's what, if any issues have you had.

I went with the 665 on cheap recently from FleaBay and love the xm. Got 6 months for $22. Will cancel in November and go for the same deal next May. Pairs great with my Sena.

Not the answer you're looking for but a heads up on the device.

My 660LM did me wrong in Arkansas. I decided to roam around and had the Garmin 660 select a motorcycle route for some twisties. In the avoidances I had dirt roads turn off; no dirt/gravel roads! Well it kept trying to take me down dirt roads some of which where so narrow and rutted I'd have tumbled. Decided to continue down the paved road till I found another paved road but, nooooo, it turned into dirt. Went back to the best graded dirt road and road it for 5 1/2 miles and got back to paved roads and ignored the Garmin's directions.

I works well with planned routes from Basecamp and I don't get stuff like this from Basecamp. I use plenty of way points to make sure my routes don't go astray.

Many talks with Garmin about unpaved roads and best they could come up with was their algorithm couldn't deal with roads that have no speed limit (many unpaved roads) and it didn't matter what you select or don't select. They said look at the road and if it doesn't look paved don't go down it. Useful advice .......

I never thought you could choose not to go down the road it was TELLING you to go down. :)

Tom, point was that if you expect it to avoid something you must turn that selection ON. Yes my 660 has directed me to go down roads of less desirable surface than I care to ride. It is always an adventure when you get in areas less traveled. I have made routes using Basecamp that seem to be paved based on the mapping feature of the road, only to find out that is not that good. Ask Mondo about a few of these routes. Unless you are a local and travel these roads daily, you never know what you are going to get to you get there. Part of the fun.

Understood to select avoidances, my point was it won't matter in much of the Ozarks, and even today in Ohio it took me down several gravel roads with avoid unpaved roads selected.

Actually I think the gravel roads had fewer deer and were more interesting.

Thought I'd add: unlike Honda, BMW's have a high teck wheel that tells you if there is any doubt what your GPS is saying......

I tend to look at Google Earth and look at satellite images. That's saved me aggravation several times. Sure wish I had that BMW system. ;)

In spite of it's occasional glitch, I wouldn't think of navigating without GPS. Horses served their purpose but as a means of transportation they have been surpassed and replaced.
 
I talked to my DIL on Saturday, looks like I'll be going for the new 660LM. Seems they have it for about $50 less than the Refurb 665LM.

I'm not too worried about dirt roads. I don't do them. Before plotting a route, I not only Google the roads, I also check them out to make sure they look to be at least a two laner with a line down the middle. :D
 
Funny, I always look for unpaved roads. This is another kind of adventure.
