I started keeping a record of my gas mileage and maintenance in an Excel spreadsheet about 20 years ago. Disregarding the tire cost and just focusing on gas mileage, the motorcycle I was riding was getting about 65 mpg vs my mini-van at about 15 mpg. Gas prices in the beginning were in the $4 range and the savings added up quickly. I figured based on the fuel cost savings, that it would pay for a nice riding jacket in two weeks of commuting, and nice pants in another week and a half. Since I was riding year around, getting good gear was both a safety consideration as well as a comfort consideration. After all, if you can't ride comfortably, you will eventually find excuses to not ride.
When you consider all the other costs, a car makes more sense...especially if you have a car for those times when a motorcycle won't work and it is in the driveway like mine.
But there's an argument that motorcycling is cheaper than golf when you join a private club.
