Getting home when your bike breaks down - and you're 1,800 miles away!!!

UP , good hear you made it through that ordeal and got your self and SweaTreat home without to many problems. Youve put some time, effort and $ in to that ST , I can see the thought of leaving her behind wasn't an option . Wheel locking up -sounds very scary. On my datters Volvo ,the same thing happed (I think) . I had heard a slite whining noise for a week or two (no leak) , I told her she better have it checked , but she didn't listen to me and went on a trip. The Volvo never made it home.

Hey Phil, it took a while to read right though the thread but I am so glad you made it home safely!

It may take a few days to physically get over it all but knowing you, this will not be an issue!

So you now have another project to add to your list.... again I would like to have been able to come and assist but the commute is a bit of a chore.....

Take care and our regards to Miss Sharyn.

Oh and I am at the point of considering moving my RT on and getting an NT1100 or similar, so another Honda! (The BMW warranty is up in September!)

Uncle Phil I think the exchange rate between US dollar and the Candian dollar made the U-haul cheaper in Canada. I am leaving in the morning for Canada on a 11 day ride and checked the exchange rate and it is around 18 percent difference. Three of us are going thru Thunder Bay area and above Lake Superior.

That could be but the rate from Nova Scotia was about $1,200 USD vs from Bangor Maine which was about $1,800 and closer.

Just a little follow up - since I will be coming to Canada in a few weeks to ONSToc and hopefully next year back to Alaska via BC and the Yukon, I have ordered a cell phone via EBay from a Canadian reseller (guaranteed to work on Canadian networks) and a Telus Sim card that I should be able to activate. That should at least give me a working cell phone while there so I won't be standing on the roadside with my hands up should I have an issue. As we say out in the country -

"Burnt Child Fears The Fire!"

There is my chance to meet you, @Uncle Phil . :D
I'll be working that week end, as any other week-end, but... I could take a day off, and meet you somewhere.
It is only 3 hours from where I live. So, I can go and come back the same day, after supper, or something like that.
Oh wait. I'm off that thursday. I could take another day off...

I'm sure lots of people wants to meet you, and talk with you. Me, I just want to see you, in flesh and bone. And... yes, I must admit it, ... receive my hug. :scared2: ;)
When are you planning to arrive ?

ONSToc (September : thursday the 08 to Sunday the 11)

exchange rate is 28% .Not that consumers get that; but l think you can do better than 18% lMHO

My plans (barring unforeseen events ;)) is to ride up to Syracuse, NY for Wednesday night the 7th, then cross the border Thursday morning the 8th around 9 AM at Prescott (highway 416) then highway 417/17 just west of Ottawa to Renfrew. If there's somewhere between the border and Renfrew that's good for a REAL breakfast (hen fruit and pig meat) we could meet there. And I am fine with Smittys if there happens to be one on the way!

Ah-ha ! Prescott is even closer to me (2 hours), along the 401 Freeway.
And then, after breakfast, Prescott to Renfrew is 100 miles. So we will also be able to do a bit of road together.

It will be a bit early for me, as I normaly go to bed at 4-5 am and sleep until noon (due to my working hours).
But, I don't work the day before. So I can go to bed a bit earlier.
And it's for a special occasion. So, yes. It sounds like a plan.

I'll do a search, to see which restaurant could accomodate your kind of appetite. :woohoo:

Phil -
Make sure that this ST11 has less than 180K miles on the water pump…
Raymond - SweetTreat only had about 136,000+ miles on the water pump and pulley when it failed on this trip. It was 'checked' by 'professionals' at 100,000 miles when they replaced the timing belt. Redbird has over 172,000+ miles and so far no water pump issues and Frost has 122,000+ miles and so far no water pump issues, so this one caught me completely by surprise. No warning except a strange noise that I now recognize before total failure - no symptoms, nothing.

I can see why the failure was a surprise. The reason that I picked 180,000 was that for preventative maintenance I replaced the original water pump on my ST at that mileage. The replaced pump still had good bearings and no leaks - in fact I kept it as a backup.

How long did that strange fendaextenda area noise last Phil ? Long enough to kinda recognize it and maybe pull over?
Juts for a few moments - that's why I didn't recognize it immediately and pull over - especially when it went away so quickly.
Believe me, if I had known what it was at the time, I would have.
Sometimes 'education' is really expensive. ;)
