Getting home when your bike breaks down - and you're 1,800 miles away!!!

I can see why the failure was a surprise. The reason that I picked 180,000 was that for preventative maintenance I replaced the original water pump on my ST at that mileage. The replaced pump still had good bearings and no leaks - in fact I kept it as a backup.
Ditto. My experience too. I may just buy and install the bearing kit on the old one for grins. It’s one of the unique 1991 pumps so it’s special, don’t you know.

That is my similar experience also with two other of my high mileage ST1100s.
I had no idea and was not expecting it until it was too late - but at least now I know what it sounds like just before it thrashes! ;)
My plans are/was to change the pulley and the water pump at the second timing belt change regardless of how good they seem to be.
Won't get that chance on this engine cause I reckon it is pretty much toast at this point.

You guys do know that Asian cars like the Honda's recommend changing the water pump when you change the timing belt.

It's one of those "you might as well" things as when everything is open the incremental cost of changing out the pump is just the part itself. I did a timing belt + water pump on my 2000 Sienna van at 160,000 km, a week later the van was totaled in an accident.....

Works the other way too, if you were changing out a leaking water pump at 140,000 km (to use the van example) then change out the timing belt at the same time even though it would be a bit early mileage wise.

... which is why I replace the whole shebang while already in there anyway... and get frowned on...

Preventative maintenance is sound practice and best for peace of mind. :)

Frown if they want to as you reduce or eliminate your chances of failures! :thumb:

My ST1100 blew a water pump which took out the timing belt so the motor is toast.
I got it towed to a lot and I am in Stellarton Nova Scotia at the Holiday Inn Express room 426.
Cell phone does not work so this is my only means of communication at this point.
Anybody near by?
There are two uhauls close by (not open til Monday).
Plan is to rent a truck or van and take her home.
To fly and then return would cost more than renting vehicle - and the bike would not be home.
Problem is no ground transportation to uhaul and no cell phone - though the hotel phone works.
I guess a cab if possible.

So what you were hearing were the trashed displaced ball bearings in the pulley?
I don't know exactly which one it was but my money is on the water pump since antifreeze was all over the ground.
I think that I am now in the 'change the timing belt, change the pulley, change the water pump' crowd now ... ;)

Jeez, with all that stuff on the bike I'm surprised you didn't rent a house where you broke down and live there.
I did figure that if nobody stopped, I'd just pitch my tent on the side of the highway until somebody did.
I was planning on camping in Newfoundland for two weeks so I carried a lot of stuff to be comfortable. ;)
It handled fine except for getting her off the center stand!

Just now seeing this post. We were in Maine at the camp when this happened. Had I known, I would have likely been able to help somehow, at least on this side of the border.
