Goldwing replaces the ST1300??

I did a group ride in PA. back in '17 and one of the guys ( and his wife ) in our group was invited to ride the " new " Goldwing, his impression of the new wing was mostly positive. another guy in our group was a honda rep, he showed up on the new wing, he rode over from NY. so he had a few miles under his belt. he lit up when he saw the Mighty ST 1300 I was riding and said " the new wing is nice but it isn't an ST1300 " and he said he was looking to get another ST 1300. as for me I think my 1500 wing will be my last wing cause I don't want another 800+ pound bike

I’m curious.

The North American launch was in Fredericksburg, Texas back in February 2018. This was the 1st time anyone had an opportunity to ride the 2018 Wing. Not sure how a Honda Rep could of arrrived on the 2018 Wing in a 2017 event or even anyone commenting on the ride of a 2018 Wing. Maybe your event in PA was in 2018. Yes the new Wing is heavier than the ST but if sure does feel lighter with its lowered centre of gravity. No regrets on going from my 2016 ST to the 2018 Goldwing.

I'm thinking DCT simply because it appears that manually-shifted bikes are going the way of manual transmissions in cars. It may be marginally easier to re-sell a DCT bike when I'm done with it.

Based on what some of the members here who have DCT bikes have said, you don't give up much and you still get plenty of Yee-Haw! in Sport mode.

I’ve ridden on many occasion the DCT bikes that Honda makes. I purchased both the 2018 White GW Tour DCT and recently just purchased a new Africa Twin DCT. I’ve been riding for over 40 yrs. Ridden over 19000 miles last summer on my new Wing. I don’t recall giving up anything with the DCT. The paddle shifting in Sport mode is probably the best riding I’ve ever experienced. Looking forward to the same experience with the Africa Twin DCT.

Time to put away the 8 tracks.

There are soooo many things in that post that make me a little green with envy.:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: Just a little.

Just for the heck of it, I browsed Cycle Trader for 2018-19 Gold Wing tour models. Found several left over 2018 non-DCT models around $20-$21k new! About 3/4 of the available bikes were DCT models though. This could be tempting should leftovers or lightly used ones fall below $20k.

The only downside I have with a DCT is the ability to pull in the clutch in slow turning maneuvers. After riding a DCT transmission for many years, riding a manual motorcycle. I forgot to shift gears down to neutral when coming to a stop and stalled the engine being in 6th gear.

With my DCT bike and CVT scooter I don't miss the clutch at all in slow turning maneuvers but perhaps it's because I learned to ride automatic clutch Hondas 50 years ago, then manuals, and then have had both for long time and ride all of them often. I drag the rear brake in these situations where I don't have a clutch.

you are correct sir i have my dates wrong, I was just looking at the pic's I took which are on my other computer and not on this laptop

Are you saying that DCT makes riding the friction zone with a clutch for slow speed maneuvering unnecessary, meaning it’s just as good if not better? So the DCT slips the clutch at slow speeds so the power is up and the engine doesn’t stall?

Leaves me wondering how it knows the difference between clutch disengagement before a stop and very very slow movement where you don’t want to stop and fall over. Senses the wheels turning and rpms?

I currently own a '04 ST1300 ABS and a 2012 Goldwing. For long trips, the GW is hands down the premier bike. The newer one is a bit smaller, has a bit less cargo space, but performs brilliantly.
If I'm just going out for an hour or two, the ST rocks.
This year will be my second 10 day+ trip out west, and the GW ticks all the boxes for speed, comfort and storage. Advancing in years as I am, speed has taken a back seat to stability and convenience. My GW seat, with a Royal Riding sheepskin gel/foam pad, has taken me on numerous 350+ mile days with No highway miles!
