GPS

I use my samsung notepad, big screen, run mapsme. all maps downloaded so it works offline (sd card). I keep trying to talk myself into a dedicated unit but unless I was running some rallies I cant see the benefit. I have google on my phone which has got to be the easiest mapping system available.

I've found I can listen to most radio stations over my phone if i do a search for the radio station, open it and they invariably have a 'listen now' button. It must be coming over the internet if you have wifi or via cell technology.

Best of all is you can use the Google assistant to do most things (i.e. "Ok google, call xxxxxx" or "... directions to the nearest gas station.") hands free.

I bought a Cardo PackTalk, which has built in FM radio, and is also fully voice controlled, to compliment my Android phone.

It really depends on what you want from a GPS. Do you want it simply to take you from point A to Point B? do you need to download routes created on a PC? glove friendly? waterproof? easily updatable? what is inexpensive to you? how "tech savy" are you? etc etc etc.

IMO, the days of standalone GPS units are numbered. There is a plethora of smartphone apps that are virtually free that are more capable than the very expensive, motorcycle specific units and smartphones available that are waterproof and glove friendly.

Personally, I don't think I will ever buy another standalone GPS unit. I currently use an old TT920 that refuses to die, occasionally a Zumo 660 that works not bad, but I find I am using my smartphone more and more and trying various navigation apps.
 
I use a Garmin 660 and have been very happy with it for almost three years now. I payed in the low 300s, stumbled across a deal while looking for something else. Connects to my Sena 20S via Bluetooth, features an MP3 players, also has an micros S/D card that allows for lots of route and music storage. Much easier to see and operate than my China Vasion.
 
After using a Lowrance that I liked (died and no new maps) was on the Garmin for a short while (it too died!) and a Chinavasion (also died!) so I seem to be pretty good at killing these things!

Now playing with a Kyocera DuroForce Pro cell phone with Osmand+ (less than $120 invested) for my GPS. Waterproof, somewhat glove-friendly, wireless charging or 2 point contact charging. Screen is MUCH easier to see in sunlight than the CV unit I had.

Got a Verizon version so it can be a backup to my other phone. Connects via bt to my Sena. DL'd all maps so it works "offline", no data charges.

Still learning the software for creating routes, but it is very promising!

Try an app called TuneIn Radio. You can tune in local radio stations as well as tons from all over the world.

That's what I'm mostly using now. I pulled the SIM card and use the Kyocera duraforce pro solely as a gps and for accessing the internet via wifi when available. I use the Locus Pro app paired with the Brouter app. I like that it does away with the difference between 'routes' and 'tracks.' Locus keeps getting better and better. I prefer using Locus to Google Maps for generating tracks using just the cell phone. With my laptop which has Mapsource (Basecamp is analogous and a later version of a program that does the same thing), it's easier to generate longer, multi day tracks and transfer those to the phone. For web based planning, I really like Furkot. Google maps is limited as far as how many stops per track and how many tiles you can download for off line use at a later time. However, you can't beat the POI's in Google maps

using the Chinavasion this week in a 4 wheeler , It suddenly stopped working , saying in a white box that it was almost out of memory ? Instruction manual doesn't cover that , that I can find . What do I do ? Is there a way to clean memory out to start over again , without wiping out yehob25's IGO8 GPS info on that $60 chip ? This was only the first trip I used it on , from Michigan to WV & halfway back again .

Reset button on the back might help. You running PRIMO or IGO8?
 
Give it a whirl as it does not hurt anything. If that doesn't work, send it to me and I'll put the version of PRIMO (stripped down motorcycle version) that I use with no issues. Curious as to how many waypoints you had on the route as that can make a big difference. I've seen some mapping software that adds a bunch of unnecessary waypoint. Also, you can email me the route and I'll take a look at it. Just PM me and I'll give you my email and address if you like.

Thanks Uncle Phil . I will use reset on it for now , although the Primo version sounds like it would be what I would need , instead of the extra features I'll never use.
I hope it will be useable the second half of June when I go to RockSToc 5
