The alternator on my high mileage 1990 ST1100 does not produce current. Is it worth upgrading to a 40 amp or can I replace the 28 amp alternator for much less money? I would like to know a trusted and economical source I could use to get a replacement 28 amp or 40 amp replacement. Thanks, Bruno.

I want to minimize my work and cost, 28 amps is fine, but if the work and cost is similar, then the 40amp may be a better choice. New to the ST's.

I got lucky and found a low mile 28 amp unit to keep as a spare. Resistance readings are within specs and I am going to see if a local shop can test it dynamically. The donor bike is/was a 1991 wreck with 37k miles on it.

That aside, the 28 amp alternator and parts are no longer available new. That makes performing the 40 amp upgrade really appealing. Probably makes more sense than keeping it stock. But...I'm a bit OCD that way, having been in the Honda restoration hobby since 1966.

Just my humble opinion... if you're going to be in there fixing the problem, might as well upgrade.

Thanks Oldbikefixr, you got lucky with that used alternator. There seem to be not many left, and they are all used ones that look ratty. You are obviously bike wise, so I will ask you. With almost 200,000km, is it worth repairing? It looks like a crap load of work.

You are probably right vinny. It will already be a ton of work to get at it and you can't buy a 28 amp stator any more. Thanks.

Like most things, it depends. If the rest of the bike is in great shape and you really like that bike, I would say yes. If either of those are questionable, I would say no.

Maybe you can part it out to recoup some $$? Is it possible to send your 28A out for repair? A repair shop will be hard to find but 30 minutes on Google and a few phone calls might get you an answer. Good luck.

Here's one I found, might be worth a call... http://myplace.frontier.com/~hemi-roid/

You need to perform a cost-effectivity analysis. Tally up the cost of catching up on all the routine maintenance due on your bike: timing belt, water pump, fork rebuild, rear shock replacement, u-joint, alternator, etc....and compare that to the cost of a nicer ST1100 or 1300. Then factor in your emotional attachment to your present bike. ....problem solved.

Hi Stewart: Decided to go for it and fix the bike. I just finished rebuilding a used 40 amp alternator from Dan in Atlanta. New tires are ordered and I sorted a few other issues out on the old ST (it is apparently number 65 imported into Canada). I am now waiting on the tools John OoSTerhuis, or making my own. The alternator I got was from a fellow in Atlanta that was parting out an old ST1100. His bike went fast. It is down to a motor in the frame now. Cheers, Bruno.
