I've googled and searched here for an ST1300 Buying Guide similar to the one for the ST1100 but haven't found anything. Have I overlooked it or is there none... Can info, links and similar ST1300 Buying Guide be collected here...?

Tip # 1 is check to see if the ECM is defective, especially if it is a pre 2008 model year. The SMC can easily be replaced resulting in a fully functional motorcycle again. The ECM can not.
 
How about buying a used ECM if it is possible to get one that matches your original one in terms of part number, model year, equipment, etc.

Has anyone done that here on the forum?
 
Honda is no longer selling new ECMs, so you are limited to used units from ebay or motorcycle recycling yards (aka junk yards). For '07 and earlier 1300s, you must get an ECM for those years. The electronic module was changed for the '08 and later years. Those two ECMs will handle all of the bikes (police bikes are a bit different but IIRC, a non police bike ECM will fit a P bike within those two model ranges (SOMEBODY CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG HERE)). No need to try to get an ECM for a specific year.
 
As I understand it, there is one type of ECM for ST1300 from 2002 to 2007 model, the other type of ECM is for model year 2008 and newer …

Yes, the later model ones from 2008 onward do not fit the earlier bikes. The big problem with finding ecu's is that as stated, you can't buy them new and they're very, very hard to find used and if you do find a used one, you have no guarantee that it will be good. And if it is good there's no guarantee on how long it will continue to work. They also seem to command a very high price. The ECU is the biggest gamble with an early ST1300 and one of the biggest reasons for looking at a 2008 or newer when looking to buy.

And two types for the cop bikes as well.
