Hondaline Heated Grips discontinued. Can they be repaired? Replaced?

My Hondaline grips recently stopped working. I did some testing and have 2.7 ohms on the clutch side grip and an open circuit on the throttle side . I have continuity right up to the point where the wires enter the grip so the break is in the throttle side grip.
Has anyone fixed one? My dealer tells me they are discontinued which I find somewhat disturbing since the controller is mounted into a hole in the fairing and if no replacement part is available the system is useless. Are there still some replacements available or are there other grips with the same resistance that can be hooked up to the existing Hondaline wiring?

You can run the $36 symtec or dual star foil heaters with the honda controller under bmw or oem grips.
iirc the oem run in series so if one goes you have not heat.
The aftermarket run in parallel. Pair the common wires and pair the hot setting leads and hook em up to the controller. The 3rd medium setting wire isn't used. The controller won't know the difference.

Thanks all. I see that Hot Grips makes a grip that has about the same resistance as the Honda grip and is wired in series. That might be an alternative.

IFAIK all heated grips are somerwhere about 36watts or 3amps for both series or parallel connected designs. Hot grips should work fine with the honda controller.

My .02, Ditch the heated grips and purchase a set of Heated Gloves. Replace the controller with a cig. socket. When and if the gloves ever stop working, simply throw them away and purchase another set.
This way nothing is attached to your bike.
You'll find the heated grips work much better than the grips also.

The upside to the grips is they're always on the bike just flick the switch no fiddling around.
The upside to the gloves is they heat the top of your hands but you need the heated liner on to plug em in. When its cold out I run both but the grips work for me when it's cool for the 1st part of the morning commute but warming up.

Either way yuze guys that don't run 'lectrics are missing out on something when its freezing out.
Spendy but you'll say why didn't I do this before.

Are there still some replacements available

They are available in the UK still as spares, I have ordered replacements and sent them across to the US for two members on here all for the cost of purchase and postage, check out David Silver Spares in the UK and see if they are in stock now, if not drop me a PM and I will see if I can sort this out for you.

I bought the complete set of new Honda grips as spares on eBay a few years back at a bargain price (about $75). And no, I ain't selling.

+1 on having both heated grips & gloves. Add heated jacket, pants and insoles, and you'll truly enjoy winter riding ... especially without the bug splats.

My original set has been working fine, except for one instance when the wire connecting the grips in series got pinched and broke (my own installation error). A continuity check identified that problem, and at the time, all I did was replace the wire without pulling off all the Tupperware. Later, when I had the Tupperware off to install the cruise control, I installed a more professional wire repair.

I think my situation is very similar to others - Have the Honda grips installed with the controller mounted on the side - my prob is the grips are wore out - still heat just fine but are smooth and hard to hold onto. I don't like to mess with electronics (i.e. not good at it at all!) - can you point me in the direction where I *might* be able to just replace the grips, splice the wires and all will be good?

You might consider the foil elements like the dualstars and the grips of your choice like the bmw ribbed ones. Much cheaper and the splice is simple. The honda controller wouldn't see any difference.

OK I finally followed through after posting this thread last fall. I also thought I should contribute something having gotten so much useful info from this site. I purchased the Symtec Heat Demons and the BMW grips referred to elsewhere on this site and followed the Schematic posted by Anna's Dad (thanks for that. It spells out the wiring crystal clear. )
Old Hondaline heated grips were removed. I used an awl which i hammered into the end of the grip at several spots till it let loose.
Cleaned up the old glue on the bars and throttle sleeve with acetone. The elements stuck on easy enough. (follow Symtecs instructions)
I used JB weld for mounting the new grips. I did not want to try hairspray and have issues halfway through a rainy trip with slipping grips. It was cool in the garage so I used a hair dryer to warm the bar ends and the JB weld so it spread nicely on the inside of the grip and both grips (the BMW ones) slid on with the right amount of effort. Watch for the glue coming out the back as you push it on and dont get epoxy on the bar end threads or you will be having fun the next day.
The wiring gets converted from series to parallel. The clutch side gets the red wires and the throttle side gets the white wires. I used the stock crimp male connector from the Hondaline grips where they join under the handlebars and spliced into the each symtec harness. The clutch side needs to have a short red wire (splice the harness) going to the white hondaline wire) and the long white wire in the harness goes to the throttle side.) The throttle side has a short white wire (splice the harness) to the white hondaline connector on the throttle side and the long red wire in the harness goes to the clutch side. (see schematic to make sure.

Routing must be done carefully with lots of slack to move the bars and twist the throttle. I soldered all the connections and used heat shink wrap. Anyway it works and is a good solution to fixing the now unavailable Hondaline heated grips. Besides the BMW grips are way more comfortable than the rock hard Hondaline heated grips.

after two failed sets of oem heated grips on my GL1800, I knew I wouldn't get them on my ST1300, besides, they are rock hard. I added Dual-Star grips heaters controlled by a Heat Troller with BMW grips. VERY comfortable grips, get very hot and cheap to replace if I ever need to. I do love my heated Gerbig gloves for cold weather, but the heated grips are great on rainy summer days or cool mornings when the heated gloves are just too much heat or too much bother to hook up. The BMW grips are very comfortable on long rides.
