Re: UPDATE to Hondaline heated grips troubleshooting (from 11-12-11)
Well, I got the whole thing put back together, the grips (wired in parallel) work great, checked the grip temp with an infrared thermometer - 130-135 degrees in ten minutes or so, plenty warm.
I used the Hondaline grip kit wiring harness black wire to connect the grips in parallel, and only had to run one jumper across in front of the steering head.
If I may have not been clear in my 12/5 post, I used the shortened "friction sleeve" from Throttlemeister - it is cemented in place over the end of the throttle tube, the throttle side hot grip is cemented onto the throttle tube with approximately 1/2 milimeter space between the friction sleeve and the end of the grip, to allow for grip expansion when heated. The grip is mounted on the throttle tube with about a 2.5mm gap between the inboard end of the grip and the switch assembly. This gap reduces to about 2.0mm with the grips heated. I mounted the Throttlemeister with about .021" gap between the bronze piston in the Throttlemeister and the friction surface of the friction sleeve, with the grips cold. This much gap engages the Throttlemiester at ablout 1/4 turn, grips cold, and about 3/8 turn, or slightly more, with the grips up to temperature. With the friction sleeve mounted on the end of the throttle tube (with the approximately 1/2 mm gap mentioned above), grip expansion due to heating has little effect on the gap between the friction sleeve and the bronze piston in the Throttlemeister. The friction sleeve expands a slight amount with the grips heated, enough to reduce the engagement point from 1/4 turn to about 3/8 turn.
So far so good. It's been my experience with Throttlemeister initial installatin, that a little adjustment will probably be needed as the friction surface of the friction sleeve wears in, increasing the amount of turn the Throttlemeister takes to engage.
Thanks again to all who volunteered their help and suggestions to assist me with the installation. Especially for pointing out the series/parallel consideration that was causing me to see very little heat at the grips when I had them temporarily wired in series.
