I'm sure it's been discussed before, but I could not find anything, so here it goes:

Is there a way you can change the Hondaline's key mechanism to match the bike's keys so you can have only one key for everything?

Thanks :)

My guess would be no. The bike key is double sided and the top box key is single sided. You would have to recreate the whole lock mechanism.

Ignition locks are normally of a different design i.e. pin tumblers whilst topboxes are normally the less secure [if one can define pin tumblers as secure] wafer tumblers .Now whilst it may be feasable it would need the requisite spare parts ,the key paths would need to be the same key length and key design etc etc.
Im sure a local locksmith could describe it better than I but at a guess Id say the costs would outweight the advantages.

I think your question has already been answered.

I had the same thought when I got the Hondaline Top box with the bike when new. But the day the top box key broke off in the lock in Spain I was pretty pleased that I hadn't pursued the idea any further. I've gone through two other keys for the top box since. (My top box key has a deep V at one point, at it develops a crack at this point after a couple of years of use).

We have two standard, none electronic keys for the panniers so that I don't over-use the ignition key.

Yup, my question is already answered. Although it would be really nice, and considering the ridiculous cost of the top box, one would require something like that.

Thanks all...:)

Having just had to take apart my top box lock in order to ascertain why a newly cut key (Ilco x132) was not working, I can confirm that the GiVi-manufactured top box does use a GiVi-type wafer lock cylinder. I would venture to guess that the OEM pannier locks are also wafer-type (rather than pin-type), and they do work with the OEM ignition key, but the difference is the keyways in the lock cylinders are different. If the Honda key actually fit into the GiVi lock, it could probably be made to work (given access to enough different wafers to swap to match the ignition key profile). However, my Honda key certainly does not fit into the GiVi cylinder, and it is probably not possible to swap the pannier-type cylinders into the top box.

Ciao,

[EDIT: Forgot to mention that I got the ILCO X132 key working--the outside grooves needed to be widened (such that they were no longer "grooves"), as this was preventing the key from inserting fully.]

Please allow me to 'hijack' the thread...
I am looking for a replacement key for my top box.
It is a "Honda-Pan American" top box.
The key looks like an old '70s Honda key and has the number "162" on it.
I haven't had any luck finding a key on the all knowin inter-web.
2 Local Honda dealers said "sorry" they don't do keys and sent me to local locksmiths.
Oddly, they tried 3 times and couldn't make a key that would work.
One works about 10% of the time and I am keeping it as a last ditch spare. It works if I stand on one foot, turn counterclockwise circles and chant "please-Please"...sometimes?
I really don't see anything that difficult about the key...maybe the blanks aren't prefect?
I had wrongly assumed that with the HONDA name on it an thekey number it would be easy, but expensive, to get a key?

The Honda top box was never sold in North America, so dealers here have no idea that it even exists, nor can they get parts for it.

Givi manufactures it and it shares keys with the V46 and E52, which is Givi part number Z661G. The Ilco X132, which fits older Volkswagens, is also rumored to work.

I've had keys made for my Honda topbox with no problem, using the ILCO blank. On the Givi lock for my KLR topbox, the locksmith had to use a different blank and thin it slightly to make it fit. I believe both boxes are made by Givi; it may just be a manufacturing variance.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
I will try the Ilco key blank.

I also really liked the "knob / key" someone came upwith on this site for the panniers and the locked glove box.
i have to go back and find those pics, but they looked really good and would save the hassle of getting the rest of my keys tangled in the handle of the pannier everytime I open them.

I keep my keys on individual split rings held together on a carabiner. Works great.
