Congrats on the bike, that generation of K bikes was the first of the four cylinder BMWs that I thought actually looked good those flying bricks where just plain ugly.

The manual states that oil consumption is normal at about 392 miles per quart

Claiming that as normal consumption sounds like the manufacturer wanting to weasel out of warranty claims for excessive oil use, I can't believe I would be convinced that is normal.

I rode one of those for around 40,000 miles, I don't remember adding oil between normal oil changes. I bought it used and didn't do anything but tires and regular maintenance.
