Got rear ended today while waiting at the stop light. Hit by a SUV that didn't quite slow down. Driver said "sorry, a bug landed on me and I didn't stop in time".

The impact pushed me 5 to 10' forward from a stand still with front brake on. Left rear panier base crushed and I'm not sure if the bumber hit the back wheel, hard to believe the panier provided the entire jolt forward.

Any thoughts on what to inspect? I am concerned to ensure there is not some damage to the final drive - rear wheel that may show up down the road. Figure i will take it to the Honda dealer and let them look at it too.

Thanks

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

Sorry to hear about the back side smack. I just recently went through the wreck/insurance/total ordeal. Given your st1100's age "Showing 94" and a crushed panier based, the drivers insurance will total the bike. Yes its hard to believe, but given the actual Vehicle cost , and damage part replacement cost (they don't repair they only replace with new, and all associated parts) its probably totalled by insurance standards. I hope you filed a police report and got all the drivers info.

If you are wanting to keep this bike, pay out of pocket for your own estimate prior to contacting the drivers insurance. Know exactly what the dealer states is wrong ( they will list any and every part to include nuts and bolts not even effected) on their inspection. This is where you'll have to go through and see what actually needs to be replaced , and what's reusable. You can then contact the drivers insurance and try to work out a pay off for repairing.. If you don't do this and start a claim, the drivers insurance will total the bike, and you will have to try and buy it back from the insurance company. Then you may be running into issues of a salvage title, and need to see what Cali Reg's are on reinspection and the differences in salvage titles.

Once again sorry to hear about the back slam, make the insurance company come to you and don't release it, if you want to keep it. If you don't want to keep it and just let them total it , take every farkle and then some off the bike before the salvage company comes and picks it up to take it to their yard to go up for auction.

Good luck with it..

Sorry to hear this. The EXACT same impact happened to me in February. The left saddlebag broke loose and passed me on the road. I jolted forwards roughly 10-15 feet. I had the local honda shop go through it thoroughly and double check the shaft drive, etc. For mine..the total damage was $1950sih. I was able to polish the scratches out of the face of the saddlebag. It's really important to look very closely and see if they impacted your rear tire.. that can mess up alot of stuff <imho>. That said, I pocketed the check and have ridden mine approx 3000 miles since the incident. Whatever you do.. have a Honda certified mechanic ok the driveline..<in my opinion>, you don't need it coming apart on you at speed.

Goodluck & again, sorry to hear about it..but glad YOU are ok.

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

Did you respond, "I understand... an SUV just landed on me!" ?

Actually I didn't respond, she looked like she was very pregnant (any day now), already a nervous wreck and I didn't want to add stress to her life.

I was pretty aware that she didn't stop in time! Said she "freaked out because a bug was on her" - I guess all brain energy goes to the bug!

Perhaps there should be a "bug reactance" test in the
DMV licence process vs. the basic "i can drive a car" test we have!!!!!

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

Good points.

I'll get the honda certified check as that is important for safety and resale - my guess is the wheel is not hit, but want to be sure.

The base of the bag is cracked but the outer is ok. Honda wanted $1240 for the bag alone! The battery cover plastic had some abraison on it from the bag pushing into it. That may be the extent - we'll see.

I'll have to take it apart tonight and inspect the damage. Then go to the honda dealer for inspection then meet with the insurance adjuster.

More to come.

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

Sorry about the the rear-ending...good advise here, when dealing with insurance copanies, you need all your ducks in a row before allowing them to do anything! Good luck!

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

Wowser, glad your okay and not flipped off the bike... a guy on the Deauville UK forum had exactly the same thing happen to him over here in the UK, bike looked "okay" and the dealer mechanics seemed to agree, but the engineer from the insurance company disgreed and told him the damage meant it was a write off..... possible damage to frame and swing arm.....

He took the cheque and bought another bike......

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

Wow oldschool1, glad that you are OK. Great advise here. Get it checked out. My wife just had a get-off last week on her 03 ST1100P. She was coming around a 90 degree corner at about 10 mph, which I had just gone around, and a cage, coming towards us, was taking up more than his half. She chose the side of the road versus the cage. As she went off the road, bike started to drop down on left side, hit that big edge of pavement, at least 6 inches deep, and then high sided to the right, with her flying off. She only got skinned up knees and elbow. Sucks-I saw the whole thing happen in my mirror. Damage to ST was $3k and Progressive didn't total it. Glad for that. Gave her a check for $2500, 500 deduct, and a check for $170 for her helmet/face shield. Dangit-I just bought her the helmet/face shield (mirror pink) to match her, new to her, ST. First time wearing it. Face shield was trashed. Helmet-OK. So have $250 worth of parts on order. Will decide later if anything else needs to be replaced. St runs fine. It must, she rode it home after we picked it up and snapped the broken mirror covers back on.

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

I've dealt with insurance companies, wrecks, and buying/repairing salvage vehicles (not for resale to unsuspecting people...for my own, or friend's uses). Good advice has been posted above. I want to add a few things-

Laws differ by state. Some states will NOT allow a totaled vehicle back on the road, even if it was for minor damage. Most insurance companies simply look at the repair estimate vs. book value, and total the vehicle if the repairs are over a certain percentage (varies by state, and ins. company). As for if you want to keep the bike, again, it depends on the state, and ins. company- but usually here in NH, if you are dealing with someone else's ins. company, they will simply hand you a check for damages, or the book value if totaled. If its an older vehicle, such as your bike, usually you don't even get a salvage title- you just get the check, then decide what to do with the bike.

Have the bike checked by a dealer. If you know the dealer well, after the ins. estimate is done, ask them what they think it would take, at minimum, to fix the bike yourself. As was mentioned, a lot of their estimate will be labor, extra parts that probably aren't even damaged, or are repairable; and many of the parts can be bought either on this forum, or ebay. When I fixed my salvage '95, the ins. estimate showed well over $1200 for each damaged pannier. I bought a pair off ebay for under $200.

Even if you choose not to fix and keep the bike, if it has fairly minor damage (meaning expensive enough to total it, but easy to fix like panniers), it might be worth buying it back to resell on here. Usually the buyback price will be book value minus damage...meaning you may be able to buy a good bike back for a few hundred dollars. Many people would be interested in a repairable bike that they at least know the history of.

Good luck...and I'm glad you weren't hurt in the crash!!!!

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

Thanks for all the great advice this really help - especially dealing with the insurance.

Today i inspected further:
left bag toast - replace (outer skin is ok)
left locking bracket that holds the bag on doesn't release to easily - replace
left side panel - some scratches and small chips where the bag pushed into it - replace
Right side bag - no visible damage
Right locking bracket lock now gets caught on plastic bracket -replace bracket
Right side panel - some minor scratches from bag hitting it - replace

I don't think the rear wheel got hit at all because there is no evidence of the license plate holder plastic bending - and the bumper had to be at least that high. I think just the bags pushed me forward. Other than these now flaws the bike is truly inwonderful condition.

I have to wait until Saturday to get an estimate at the Honda dealer and put the insurance adjuster off until Monday. My greatest worry is the adjuster trying to wiggle his way out of replacing panels for small scratches - but those are the only scratches on them and that degrades the appearance. Also I will change the parts out myself as that simply is my nature rather than having a shop do it (not my comfort zone).

More to come after the estimate.

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

Also depending on State. Here in Kansas they must buy new helmet, even if not visibly damaged. Pay sales tax on "Real" value of motorcycle...my insurance used the "Average" dollar figure for my bike from NADA. Also pay title fees. I had a 09 ST1300 ABS and rec'd 13,490 plus 1187.00 for tax and title plus 400 for my Shoei. Needless to say I'm sticking with my insurance company forever.

My insurace estimate was 10,300 in repair cost.

Re: Inpection advise after rear ended?

I just spent all morning getting an inspection/estimate at the Honda dealer for a cost of 133.

Heres what they came up with:
Left side cover : 275
Rear Fender A, RR: 83
Reflector, reflex: 13
Saddlebag left: 1240
Stay saddlebag (bag hanger):141
left Cowl (plastic directly above pannier): 280
Lock Assy (Locks saddlebag on holder): 75
Muffler: 600+ (I had them remove this because it was not damage and not hit - they pointed to a spec on the very end about the size of drop that was a water spot!!1)

Subtotal parts: 2108

Labor 2.1 hrs parts + 133 for estimate: 320
Total $2428

The Honda estimator did say the insurance adjuster will probably want to paint plastic parts instead of replace plastic as the scratches are minor and covered by the bag when installed (i'm not into painting parts that's for sure). He said the saddle bag they have to buy the whole bag not just the base (to buy the base you must buy the whole bag).

Sounds ALOT like my estimate. They told me that my right rear muffler was dinged...and I couldn't see it either. Like I said..I took the check..fixed my bag..paid Honda and never looked back. I wasn't trying to make a profit..but I needed to know what was wrong with the bike. They never asked if I was going to fix..what Honda found...they just cut me a check. I was just glad they didn't find anything wrong with the drivetrain.. I am happy that yours doesn't appear to have any problems either.

Ride on..and be safe!
