5 years ago I bought a DD’d St1300. I rode a few thousand miles and was happy to get on stock tires.
However, I have an 8000-10,000 highway mile ride in the works for August, a 2000 mile ride next week, and the thought of blowing through the cost of stock tires and time changing them has sent me the to darkside for a bit.
Add to these rides that I found out I can go to Reno Air races in September for another 5000 miles and it could be a record high mileage year for me.
On eBay I scored a BFGoodrich g-force comp 2 AS with 1/64” wear for $60. Surely this would be an old tire at that price with practically no wear right, 4/22 build date. Sweet deal.
For up front I ordered a new BT46.
They took a lot more work than expected.
The g-force rubbed the swing arm enough to put a little drag on the tire. A slight amount of grinding on swing arm and a little bit on tire. I inflated to 45 pounds to mock up for a hot tire and was still clear.
I seem to be good to go.
The front tire was harder. I have a fender extender. There was heavy rubbing where the shoulder hit extender. Also there was rubbing on both sides of the rear portion of the fender. Just enough to clean the dirt off. The hand held grinder took care of trimming the inside of the extender. A bench grinder came in handy for the tire. I just spun the tire by the grinder.
Eventually I achieved the ever so slightest rub and called it good enough for a shake down ride. Then I inflated the tire and had clearance.
Again I figure that I am good to go.
A 10 mile test went fine, might ride 50 tomorrow.
Any thoughts from some DD riders on such close clearances?
