Key Broken In Topbox lock

Louie Louie

As I closed my topbox the key broke in half. Looking for a good quick fix. I have a spare but part of the broken key is in the lock!. Is the best remedy to take the box to a locksmith? Thanks.

A locksmith would probably use something like this.

Now would be a good time to get some ILCO or Curtis x265 HD109 blanks for the rest of the bike.
Put the OEM one someplace where you won't be tempted to use it :)

I don't know the top box blank off the top of my head.

I've read that in a pinch you can use two halves of a coping saw blade as extractors, but I have not had much luck with that personally. Best bet, unless you can get an extractor or pick set as Carl recommends, would be to to take it to a locksmith. Shouldn't be too much trouble for a professional, and if you can take it to him rather than have him come to you, it shouldn't be too expensive.

What you need is a small pick that most key-shop will have.. it slides in and can hook on the key to remove. Coping saw blade sounds good if you remove some of the teeth or what may also work is a partly straighten out fish hook ground thinner.
You want to be able to depress the tumblers to get in and then hook on one of the peaks on the key.

PS - whatever you do, be careful - you may wind up forcing the broken piece further into the lock thereby requiring disassembley. DAMHIKT.

Fixed. Took bike to Locksmith and he removed broken key and made a couple spare keys. Thanks for the advice. Total cost: $27.
