Kickstand switch

I just completed installing a Bluetooth stereo on a PA model (electrical nightmare). I did something wrong because now the bike intermittently won't start unless the kickstand is up and the clutch in neutral. Other times is starts as normal. The intermittent problem makes it hard to nail down. I'm thinking an intermittent short somewhere around the kickstand switch, maybe?
Any suggestions?

I think it is more likely you cut into the harness/circuitry for the kickstand switch or the clutch cut out or the neutral switch. I'd suggest that you carefully go over everything you did electrically to the bike installing your bluetooth. Ideally, you simply grabbed power from the battery or aux. fusebox and did not touch any more of the bike's wiring. Since you said the bike's wiring is a nightmare, it sounds like you made some modifications to it. I would guess that something in your electronics is telling the bike sometimes that the kick stand is down or the clutch is not squeezed while it is in gear.

On my 1300, if the bike is in gear, and the kick stand is down, she will not start. Headlight blinks off as I push the starter button - nothing more. Pull in the clutch, no change. Bike HAS to be in neutral. If the kick stand is up, with the bike in neutral it will start regardless of the clutch position. If kickstand is up, bike in gear, she will start only with clutch pulled in. If the kickstand is down, putting the bike in gear shuts the motor off.

a. What do you mean by clutch in neutral? Clutch pulled in (squeezed)? Clutch released (hands off the clutch lever)?
b. Once you clear up the terminology, we can do a better job of troubleshooting without guessing.
c. What is the transmission position when this unplanned shut down (or no start situation) occurs? In gear or in neutral?

If the transmission is in neutral, then clutch and kickstand position is irrelevant, right? I've heard the Police models had additional wiring in them which makes mods problematic. I've never seen any schematics, don't know if any exist, which doesn't help matters. And all those dangling wires... :eek1:

I agree on clearing up what you exactly mean by clutch in neutral.

Transmission in Neutral, sorry. Every Honda I have owned are all the same.

Pat, Sirepair, and Phil, Uncle Phil both have police bikes and have made various mods (electrical). You might PM them with your questions. There are also some threads here aimed at used police bikes. Do a search for them, read them to get a sense of what each owner has done to his bike, and PM them, asking if they have a wiring diagram or if they have delved into the electrical system.

To clear things up. The only thing I did was remove abandoned wiring, and metered the wires from the right hand controls until I found the switch I wanted. I labeled everything; stay on power, ignition power, and switches 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
I used switch number 5. I will test that this evening to see if it interrupts the starter.
Thank you everyone for your inputs.
