LED headlights

Will try and cut on the factory cover/rubber boot and see if we can make those work as i have a ruined one.

While the aftermarket dust covers will provide a tight fit, you may not be able to hand cut the hole larger in the stock cover and get it to seal well against the body of the lamp base. Unlike a projector bulb converrsion, the LED retrofit still relies on the reflector to focus the beam. I disagree with the position that it is to keep rain out and that there is not much rain up there. It is called a "dust cover" and I believe that if you don't get a good seal that you would have a host of undesirable things inside the reflector including dust, small bugs, condensation, etc. I can't think of any hidden open place that stays clean.

should I order the H4 version?
Yes.

Just trim tabs and they plug right in with no other mods?
That depends. Trim the tabs yes. If the fan is designed to be removed by the customer (meaning without breaking something) then probably no other mod is required. Separate them and install the bulb. Then install the rubber boot then fan.

If the fan can't be separated the boot may have to be cut to be placed over the fan. I didn't have to do that but I have different LEDs (Evitek G6s). If it came to cutting the boot I was going to drill two small holes on either side of the opening then make a slice across it bisecting the opening. Sort of o------O------o with the idea of the holes keeping the cut from tearing further.

Then the boot would of fit over the fan and some blue or duct tape the cover the cut and holes.

Some brands/models are designed so that the plate with the tabs can be removed. If yours are of that sort, you are good to go.

  • Remove tab plate
  • Remove the two lower tabs
  • Install plate
  • Install boot
  • Insert bulb/fan unit through boot and seat firmly into the tab plate.
  • Connect power

I have a st 1100. What are these additional plates everybody refers to when changing out the bulbs?
Are they already being used or something additional I need to order?

You'll need to purchase shims for the ST1100 so the bulbs fit correctly. You trim the two lower tabs off the bulb holder and slip the shim on so the tabs line up with the slots on the motorcycle's bulb receptacle.

One source for the shims... https://cyclemax.com/inc/sdetail/gl1500___h_4_headlight_bulb_shims/4102/6959

Here's a post I made on replacing the ST11 bulbs with LEDs... https://www.st-owners.com/forums/th...lible-no-glare-no-scatter.149590/post-2004669

Either you have the boot and lamp upside down or you have your rolling tool chest hanging from the ceiling. ;)

Seriously, the install looks good but I am not sure whether your lamps are supposed to have the wire pigtail at the top or bottom. Mine exit at the bottom. On the 1300, the cup around the low beam emitters is concave up (open at the top) when properly installed. If during your initial light-up you find that you are signalling passing aircraft or the International Space Station try rotating the bulbs 180 degrees.

The fairing is more stable when upside down. The wire is at the bottom and the cup is open at the top. Thanks for the tip.

Ah yes. My sleep-addled brain did not pick up on the possibility that the unit was out of the bike. Duh!

Got everything back together today and I was astounded at the difference from the stock headlights. Won't be able to take a ride tonight, but here's a garage pic:

I installed the Texmax LED'S yesterday. A lot brighter on the way into work this morning. Can see a long ways with the high beams on. Can see further with the low beams as well but not as far as I think I should? I think they are adjusted too low. I'll try raising them a bit couldn't see to do it in the dark this morning.

I'm looking for some install advice.

>> Remove the mounting "collar" from the rest of the LED bulb assembly

I bought the Techmax as shown in Jeff's post 130. In his photos, I think I'm seeing that he separated the collar, installed that, then the boot as in previous instructions in this thread. Is there some trick to getting the collar off the rest of the LED assembly? I've tried pulling it off with moderate force but it doesn't seem to want to separate. How do you do it?

I have not seen the Techmax lamps but the photos in post 130 look like there may be a 1/8 counterclockwise twist needed to do the separation. (Look closely at the second photo.)

If so, hold the lamp with the fan facing you. Put one hand on the tab ring and try rotating the fan 1/8 turn ccw then gently pulling.

Does that do it?

My Eviteks are different so I am guessing based on a photo detail.

I installed the TECHMAX Mini H4 LED headlight bulbs today. After dark, I went out for a test ride. Much brighter and substantially improved lighting. However, after a couple of miles, one of the bulbs started flickering on and off, then went out, then came back on, etc, until I got back home. I'll look into the problem tomorrow. It's hard to imagine the connector is loose as it was a tight fit when I connected the plug to the socket. I zip-tied the connected headlight wires other wires behind the upper cowl so they wouldn't be dangling as much. Wierd.

What I'm seeing is that once the bulbs have been on for 5 minutes or so, when on low beam, the high beam LED is flickering on and off on one of the bulbs. Trying to find the issue I was switching the high beams on and off. When I switched back to low beam, the right side high beam LED continued to flicker on and off. Bad bulb? Connection issue? ??

Never saw this happen with the standard lights.
