Left Glove Box Radar Mount

Hi All

Waiting for my Escort x50 and thinking about placement. Several have said they use the left lockable glove box. I was thinking about that also. Has anyone had any heat issues with that. Do you just lay it in there? Can you mount it sidways and velcroe to the side of the box?

I have wondered about the area above the headlight that you may be able to access by removing the wind shield and dash cover?

Being a cop for 15 yrs. I may answer some issues. First it is true that "fiberglass" is transparent to the waves-signal from radar guns. X/K/Laser, etc. WILL transmit through the fairing panels. BUT, I tested this. If the RADAR is unobstructed (out in the open) you will receive the signal/alert much faster. As much as 3-5 seconds and over 100 ft. min. Thus, when traveling at 55mph or faster, it would be to your advantage to have the "detector" in the open. The heat does get toasty on a 95 degree day and running around in town. I WOULD mount the unit in the open to use it's premium circuitry to better use. Remember, motorcycles have a very small "print" compared to cars, and larger vehicles. With the performance of motorcycle brakes and the before mentioned "print-size", you should be able to avoid "tag-your-it!" BUT....here are some secrets. (Not to most...) On the crest of hills...boom, officers will use "pulse" signals. You will NOT beat the laser or doppler signal. Laser requires aiming the radar unit in a minimal 4-8 degree width band. Very narrow, but precise. And obivously Lydar/Airplane use, you are out of luck. No wavelength transmission. All you guys with fiberglass cars, Vettes, Firebirds, Camero's, you're hard to get. A good traffic officer HAS other ways....which I must hold my tongue. Good luck!

Have mounted the X50 in the left glove box. With the power plug in I dont think it can be mounted in there in a horizontal position. Is a little to wide. I have velcroed it to the outside (left side) wall so it is in a vertical position. The screamer and all the wiring are in there. It is working but I am unsure if the vertical position provides as good a reception angle for the antena or reciever (not sure what you call it).

I went to a local Safeway store and played around with it in my hands. It seemed the vertical position signial was a little weaker then the horizontal? But not sure.

I've had my V1 in the side pocket of my 1300, and previously my 1100, for years. Seems to be working fine. Would it work better out in the open? Probably, but in the pocket I don't have to worry about theft, or moving it whenever I park. Aside from that, I live in Virginia.

I was considering doing just that last week when I had the front off to install the new HID system. From my measurements, there will not be enough room for my 9500ix to fit in there on the shelf (just above the headlights) where it will need to reside. It would have been able to provide a fairly weather tight location with a hidden agenda.

I was considering cutting an access door into the front of the nose piece and installing hinges, weather stripping and a lock system to do this, but the ruler says NO. Bummer.

Until something better comes up, I'll continue to use my dash shelf.

Have not checked the specs but I would quess they are built to take a little heat as the normal auto mount is in the window?

Especially in a car with the windows closed in the summer!

I had my radar detector mounted in the front fairing on my ST1100. I now have a 2-piece radar detector on my ST1300. The control unit is in the fairing pocket and the antenna is located behind the plastic in the front fairing. I hear the alerts in my helmet speakers. It works well.

I have a Turbo City Tom mount on the right with Dual Lock works best for me. My Escort 8500 has a Cycle Gadgets rain cover and a bright LED flasher mounted in the vent area aimed at my eyes makes up for the sounds I can't hear.
It has saved me probably 20 times in five years. I don't use it around town as it could walk away. It does find airports and traffic speed signs, but it is worth it, I went and got the blue one...just to be cool.
