Hey Guys,
I picked up an 91 ST a few months ago and have been loving it. Super fun bike to run, and I've enjoyed working on it. Since I've gotten it, I've done the standard maintenance (tires, fluids, filters, valves, etc) for it.
Something I've noticed that I can't quite identify is that when I removed my hands from the handlebars at lower speeds the handlebars begin to wobble. At first, slowly and then more aggressively, and it would probably throw me off the bike at some point.
The second I put my hands back on the handlebars, even a finger, it dampens the wobble enough for it to go away. When I was talking to the shop that did my tires, the guy working told me to just not worry about it- it's a 35 year old bike, and the owners manual even says not to take your hands off the handlebars. But I feel like this behavior is really strange, and I don't get the impression that if properly set up the bike will do this.
I'm not entirely sure what could be causing this. I saw another thread where someone made an comment that over-tightening tapered bearings may lead to a "low speed wallow", so perhaps that is related.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!
Edit: It's worth mentioning that I had to fix a clutch hose leak that I believe had been going on before me and with the previous owner. The frame seems to clean up "good enough" and I didn't see any serious corrosion, but it's worth mentioning.

- The wobble happens a low to medium speeds (15~55 mph) and goes away entirely at highway speeds. Wobble only happens when my hands are entirely off of the handlebars.
- Using the throttle lock to maintain speed does not stop it, only putting my hands back on the handlebars.
- Forks seem fine- no signs of leaking fluid and I don't think the suspension travel or stiffness feels alarming (I can't easily bottom it out)
- Tires are inflated properly
- This was happening before I had both tires replaced and balanced, and continued afterwards
- I don't notice any play in the steering or "loose" feeling.
- I put the bike on the center stand and pushed it back so the front wheel was in the air. Turning the handlebars through their range of motion I noticed that there feels like there is a "detent" in the center, that is that it takes a slightly larger amount of force to push it right or left when the steering is forward. When returning to the center position, it seems to want to "click in".
- This is fairly gentle feeling and only something I noticed after paying close attention
- I'm not sure if this is the intended function, or if this indicates some kind or wear or improper setup
- Other than that, motion feels smooth and continuous.
I'm not entirely sure what could be causing this. I saw another thread where someone made an comment that over-tightening tapered bearings may lead to a "low speed wallow", so perhaps that is related.
