Luggage Rack That Works With ST1100 Hondaline Backrest

I've been searching the forums but I've been unable to find any post that talks about using a luggage rack with the ST1100 Hondaline backrest (the one with the pouch on the back). I'm trying to get my wife comfy. So far I've tried a Corbin with a back rest (the backrest is good but takes up some of the room on the back seat) and a RDL with a Givi topcase/backrest combo that gives her more room on the backseat but she doesn't like the feel of the Givi/backrest.

The Hondaline backrest with the RDL seems to work best. Ideally I'd like to keep the Givi too or at the least have a rack for carrying soft luggage. SO - I was wondering if anyone has been able to buy a luggage rack that works with the ST1100 Hondaline backrest. If not, has anyone fabricated a rack and if so can you please share a picture(s).

Thanks - Charlie

A long time long distances rider Ron Majors (RIP) designed and built racks. There may be some used ones around.

I think Sampson used to make one but they're out of business now. Have you tried laying a flat rack on top of the back rest? It would probably need 2 slots cut out for the backrest. I would use socket head screws for the front screws and button heads for the back 2 screws.

You could try mounting the backrest on a flat luggage rack by drilling the 4 mounting holes big enough for the backrest "boss" to fit into.

If the rack was thick enough (3/8"-1/2"), you might get away with a section that slides under the back rest mount and longer screws to hold in place. Kinda like a ~ 6" wide handle for the rack.

Pirates Lair might be able to help or suggest someone. www.pirateslair.net

Can't get you a picture right now, but I had a machinist friend hand design and cut a plate of 7/16 stainless to mount under my backrest and just used longer cap headed (hex) screws like the stock ones. Had quite a few slots for holding things cut into it to cut the weight. Know any machinist friends ?

Charlie - What I did was cut a steel plate that moved my Hondaline trunk back about 3 inches, then installed the Hondaline backrest pad on the trunk. The plate has holes that match the 'normal' hole pattern for the back rest/trunk and holes further back that match the holes for the trunk so the OEM stuff did not have to be modified. The principle should work for any trunk. BTW, I also added a 'extension' for mounting my CB antenna.

I appreciate the various feedback - Thanks. Uncle Phil, I'm thinking I might end up doing what you did. Do you have any concern about what happens to leveraging the case further back off the bike - what that might do to the stress on the two front bolts closest to the seat? Any sense of whether moving it back further had an impact on the handling of your bike?

Charlie - I've got this plate on all three of my ST1100s and so far no problems (close to 250,000 miles of riding between the three). The key is to make the plate out of pretty good steel so it doesn't crack. I've noticed no problems at all with the handling after this mod. I've probably got the original Autocad drawing somewhere if you had access to Autocad. (I cut them on our laser at work).

I've got one of the Major racks, as a matter of fact it was bought from his estate, I'll see if I can find it and post up a picture if that helps. I don't use it so that's the reason I'll have to find it first

I was having this same issue and maybe my solution will work for you.

My bike came with the Givi rack fitment kit so other than that, you just need about $20 worth of supplies from Home Depot and not further modifications needed.

Parts needed:
Givi Fitment kit supports and spacers (Parts #2 & #5, http://www.sporttour.com/givi_pdf/e190.pdf)

4 x M8-1.25 x 50mm Bolts
2 x M8-1.25 x 45mm Bolts
2 x M8 fender washer
1 x NDS 9" Poly grate (preferred for style and size)
or
1 x NDS 12" Poly grate

This is pretty simple.

Take off back rest replace with the Givi supports.
Put backrest on top of the Givi supports, secure with the 4 x 50mm bolts

If you use the 9" NDS grate, it will have to go diagonally on the supports and under the backrest bag (take off bag and do not resecure bottom)

If you use the 12" NDS grate you can place it square to the bike.

Either way secure the grates through the slots with the 45mm bolts and fender washers.

Warning! The grates are pretty sturdy but I would NOT place too much weight on them. The Givi supports only reach 4-5 inches underneath and again are only mounted by the 2 bolts. Thats why I prefer the 9" grate besides I think it looks cooler.

Let me know what you think.
