Mellow's August MNSTOC Trip

You guys are something. As a relative newbie, getting ready to attend his very first *STOC (WiSTOC), I'm not so sure I can keep up with your riding styles. I hope to some day ...

You don't have to, the whole point is to do what works for YOU... no matter how long you ride there will be someone that rides faster or slower, more hrs in the day or less... it just doesn't matter. In the end, the race is with yourself.

Let's have a big AMEN to that!!!

Aman, well said Mellow.

How good is a plastic painter's "drop cloth" to put under the tent?

...
The purpose is to protect the tent, I would go with a cheapo poly tarp from walmart as it's probably tougher, but also noisier..

Since my current bike doesn't have a trailer hitch... yet (still debating if I want to put one on even), I've been packing my tent. For a ground cloth I've been using Tyvek house wrap sheets cut to just under the tent floor size/shape. I would think for the extra protection of setting up on gravel and shale I'd likely use 2 layers of Tyvek. It's pretty tough stuff. AND CHEAP! I rode around one day about 7 years ago to where there was a lot of apartment construction going on and asked if I could buy some left over cut-off pieces of the stuff. There is always plenty of waste from the roof peaks that are way more than big enough for a tent. The builders I found just pulled off about 8 ft from their 16 ft wide roll and said just bring by some cokes sometime. Now I have multiple ground cloths that will last a good long time (still using the original ones I cut). Water proof, yet breathable so less condensation under the tent. Got that tip from another moto camper forum. Not so sure of using solid plastic but many do so it will work. The only ground cloth I know is not noisy would be nylon foot prints made for your tent. But even those make some noise.

Been also using a few smaller (20L, 35L and 45L) dry bags to pack on back. Need to find a large dry bag duffel to replace at least 2 of those just to make tying it down easier.

And thanks again for posting this trip Joe. Makes me wish I had more time to travel.

Nicely put !! And I am slowly building my miles per day. Time with work is always an issue ...

BTW ... only a true geek would actually put the VLA on their destination list. You're the man, Mellow!!

Don't worry, the worst rain and traffic was the last 17 miles home...

Cool pics Joe, thanks for the stories.

On my one week 4200 mile trip out to NatSToc and back, the only real rain was the last 150 miles across Missouri (Missery) to get home. Nothing like your state welcoming you back.
