So I was in need of some moly grease as defined by the Honda Service Manual:

I thought how hard could that be? I'll just cruise on down to the local auto parts store and get some.

Turns out that there are a lot of greases that call themselves moly grease, but nowhere on the can does it specify the percentage. So I noted the brands and went home to check out the data sheets. Surely they would specify the percentage of moly.

Well, no, none of the data sheets I looked at specified the percentage of moly.

After some researching, I ended up getting this:

In case you missed it, note the mil-spec on the canister. It turns out that a grease that conforms to this mil-spec "shall contain not less than 4.5 percent and not more than 5.5 percent molybdenum disulfide".

So all one needs to do is look for a grease that conforms to this mil-spec and you'll know your getting the right grease for use where Honda calls for moly grease (not paste).

Apologies if this is common knowledge; just passing it along.

and here we go again, but with moly grease instead of moly paste. :bigpop: :bigpop::bigpop:

You could have saved a little money and got Shell Gadus S3 V460D (3%) or S3 V460XD (5%). AeroShell is expensive.

Always looking to save a little money.

I checked the SDS for both of those products and nowhere on them does it specify the percentage. I guess that information must be published elsewhere. Where did you find it?

EDIT: See it now on the TDS.

It should be on the spec sheet. The 460D meets the 3% MOS22 Caterpillar spec. The XD is "extra" moly, which is 5%. I am a sales rep for a large Shell distributor.

Thanks much. The info seems harder than it should be to track down. I found the XD percentage on the spec sheet, but had to rely on a Shell sales rep to get the percentage for the 460D!

Aeroshell won't let you down...:plane1:

If it's good enough for flight, it's good enough for the bike.

I used NAPA-sold Moly EP grease for almost 20 years on F.D. splines , before I even knew about the "paste" , with no ill - effects or failures .
