I've been looking at the motoport stuff for years.

I finally decided to pull the trigger and get a jacket first to see how I liked the
product, then decide whether I wanted pants as well.

Recently, they expanded their line to include a Police jacket similar to those
worn by police in Hong Kong - whatever - I just liked the style of this one
over the other ones.

Quality:
It's true, you get what you pay for. Everything on the jacket just seems like
it's tough and will last a long time. Time will tell of course but the initial out of
the box impression is very high.

Options:
I opted for a zippered pocket on the left sleeve so I could keep ear plugs and
the top box key - this is on my Tourmaster transition II jacket and I wish
more jackets had that as an option.

Fit:
The jacket feels large at first. The label in the jacket says XXL but I've never
worn XL on anything much less XXL so I think they just find a jacket that
requires the least amount of modifications to begin with based on the custom
measurements.

It feels like it's about 2-3 inches too long for me in the torso area. That's
based on the other jackets I have so I'm going to call them to see if that's
something they can adjust for. However, the more I wear it the better it feels
and that seems to be less of a concern.

I did trim about 1 inch off the bottom of the back armor so when I sit on the
bike the armor doesn't push up on the jacket. I also trimmed about 1 inch
off the top of the chest armor for the same reason. These are things
motoport suggests to get a better fit.

Armor:
This stuff is great. I just have the basic Tri-armor in the jacket and
the 'obvious' difference between this and the Olympia and Tourmaster armor
is amazing.

1st off, you don't just get elbow armor, it integrates forearm protection.
The chest armor does help make the jacket 'feel' too big at first but as
soon as you try to put on one of your other jackets in comparison - all of
a sudden you feel very exposed in that area. The back armor is a little
wider than my other jackets but the shoulder armor - size wise - feels similar.

Visibility:
The yellow reflective tape is VERY reflective - I like it a lot.

The arms are Hi Viz and are made of the Stretch Kevlar material as well as
the black that is above the shoulders and around the neck area.

The rest of the black material is Kevlar Mesh.

Cost:
Yup - you're looking at $430-$460 - However, I have two jackets currently
and they are both in the $200+ range each so since I'm planning on this being
my all-weather jacket (I'll use my Olympia liners which I really like) I feel the
price is a bit easier to handle.

What I don't like:
I really just have one grip at the moment - I haven't had a chance to take
the jacket on a long ride so I'll update this if I have more issues.

My one issue is there is no waterproof inside chest pocket. My Olympia and
Tourmaster have these and it's great to hold your wallet. On the flip side of
that having your wallet in your chest pocket and then going down hard on
your chest may not be a good idea anyway.

Update: 1/11/2011
I did find the sleeves around the wrists were too tight. Sent the jacket back and they adjusted that for and extra $48 (including shipping) which I'm not crazy about however, that adjustment really made a difference.

Update: 3/13/2011
I decided to order the mesh pants. They are a bit too short and the butt area has a lot of extra material. I may have to send them back to get these issues resolved. I do find it disturbing that all the measurements asked to provide a 'custom' fit don't result in a custom fit and result in more $$ added to some pretty high dollar gear.

I have a black and gray kevlar coat made by Motoport and they are a great coat and customer care is 2nd to none !!!!!The pants are as great as the coat A little stiff when new.Can be repaired if you happen to have a get off.As good as leather for protection but breaths for air flow

How does it look for venting for hot weather?

The arms are not mesh and the extra padding may hinder air flow but I did
some searches on the site before ordering and some feel it's still cool enough.

The only vents are under the arms. The arms themselves are not mesh but most of the rest is.

I'll provide an update when summer rolls around but I would think it's going to
be close to what the other motoport jacket reviews are showing. Their site
states the jacket ranges from -20F to 85F (w/liners) and 65F-120F (without
liners). I know I don't want to test those extremes but I'm sure I'll hit the
105-110 area sometime next year.

Because of the extra armor - I'm pretty sure it will be a bit warmer feeling
than my Olympia Airglide II.

Good write up Joe. I have never been a big fan of Motoport stuff,it always looked bulky, but yours looks pretty good. But did you get opional armour with yours ?

I like the additional reflective tape on that jacket.

If the jacket feels a bit stiff you might try putting it through the washer (mine specifies a front load machine and to leave the armor in). We noted after the 1st time I washed ours that they felt much more, for lack of a better term, pliable after the wash.

Is it waterproofed on the outside or does in use and inner waterproof liner?
I like the look of it.

If that is a 2XL, I'd have to have like a 4XL, but I bet you are right about the custom fit stuff. I will be interested in your long term test.

Is this jacket, as with the Aero suit, rain resistant but not rain proof?

It's a mesh jacket - not meant to be waterproof at all. You'd have to get liners you put on underneath or a rain suit you put on over it.

The jacket doesn't really feel stiff at all which is what I was expecting.. perhaps the stretch kevlar sleeve vs the full mesh kevlar of the other jackets they make contributes to that.

You can toss it in the dryer on air fluff with some tennis shoes... it'll beat it into a nicer pliable condition.

My Kevlar Mesh is pretty pliable now after... uh, 7 years :D

It's an amazing air flow you get even with all the armour in it... when you sweat and the air flow hits... feels great :bow1:

Nice jacket ....
Is your beard shorter or just getting lighter colored ????
Im still in the two jsacket stage as these are just more than I can cough up for now and I need a lot of cooling more then I need warm

Joe, thanks for the write up. I've been waiting to see your impressions before pulling the trigger. Maggie's given me the green light so I'll be ordering soon.

I just got the Airmesh Kevlar jacket. Pricy yes but what I'm hearing about riding gear disintergrating on impact I thought I'd give motoport a go.. They say if they cant fix it, you get a new one!! Mine is HiViz green,,,,,,,,, Nothing like Olympia, more toned down... more like a catipillar guts green... I'm a 42-43 chest and I got a large with a touch smaller waist. We went back and forth on size and I finally sent him pictures of my measurements (sleeve, waist and chest measurements). This fits PERFECT. Best fit I ever got... well shoot, it's custom. Even with my widder electrics in it just fits perfect... spooky. Like Joe, I haven't given it a long ride yet. As for rain liners I'm gonna use my frog togs instead. I can't see stopping to put in the liner in. I live in So Fla so a little rain is a welcome site to cool you off. If it's a gully washer, I'll break out the frog togs..

I'll probably spring for the air mesh pants also when I get some more "discretionary" cash..

Joe, did they not ask you to send measurements to them rather than getting a standard size? Looks good and I bet it will work well for you.

For others who are shopping, the Marathon version has long vents on the sleeves that work well and a vent across the top of the back. (I didn't get those expensive liners either). They will make the pockets any way you want em.

Joe, did they not ask you to send measurements to them rather than getting a standard size?

Yes, spoke over the phone with Wayne. I don't believe they had these in stock at all so there wasn't an off the shelf version or I would have gone with a Large as that's typically what works for me. This one is custom so the XXL on the label I believe doesn't mean anything. I just thing the torso is a bit too long which might be the difference between a L and XXL, not sure but I'm pretty sure an XXL would go down to my knees. :rofl1:

I would say from the pictures Joe, it looks to fit you very well. Would never guess the size says xxl !!

If it looks big anywhere it would be around the shoulders, but that's exactly what we need if we want to lift our arms up :)
