I am watching the procession of the Royals as they leave Queen Elizabeth in state.

What make model are the police motorcycles leading the way?

the ones I saw the other day were BMWs either R1200rtp or and most likely R1250rtp... you can see the jugs hanging off the sides

I watched that also and thought the same thing. Are those St's ? The style looked close but different, especially the hard bags, etc.
I didn't notice the sideways engine though :)

from google...... In the United Kingdom, the most common police motorcycles are the BMW R1200RT-P and the Yamaha FJR1300. UK police forces have withdrawn the Honda ST1300 Pan-European since the death of an officer was blamed on the machine.

The UK police sure know how to make their cars, bikes and riding gear visible and they obviously have better taste in their choice of manufacturer of bikes than most North American police forces.

I'm not sure what bikes are currently being used but they won't be run of the mill Police Spec motorcycles. This escort work will be being carried out by the Met SEG (Metropolitan Police Special Escort Group). They were based in Barnes, Sarf Landarn, don't know if they still are. They've used some fairly oddball bikes over the years, even had a spell on VFR1200F's.
I think what you are seeing them on now is Beemer 1200/1250 RS's.
The SEG spend most of their time in the Met area so have no requirement for full fairings which would only hinder manoeuvrability in the city. They are the ones you see escorting politicians and visiting dignitaries, plus the Royal family of course.
They know their job very well and all are probably firearms too.
For the forthcoming funeral there will be a mix of bikes from the wider met catchment and mutual aid forces.

Note the lack of battenburg markings and the smaller panniers, whistles are typically used to warn of approach. Sirens have little use in cities and wouldn't be welcomed by the escorted.

Ray,

Do the officers have their choice of helmet brand, in white of course, or do they all wear the same and if so, what brand?

Forest, I think I saw them wearing Arai the last time I took any notice. But I also think there will be variations for personal preferences, head shape etc.
Certainly in the Shires there was a list of approved helmets including the BMW system helmets and also Arai, amongst others. My personal choice was always Arai at work.

Kawasaki is showing Welsh bi-lingual markings so must have been brought in as re-enforcement to Met squad. Not SEG.
