A very courageous lady. may she RIP.
Also the courage/consideration of the family to let her decide her own fate. Doesn't always happen.

Jock, I'm sorry to hear about Sylvia. Love the phrase on her shirt. I bet that says a lot about her personality.

Thank you all for your condolences and kindness. I wrote her a poem before she passed which I share with you here:

Song for my sister

I am the usurper,
The one who stole your place
As the baby of the family.

You made the journey into the world before me, leading the way.

But everything has a price.
How many times I hated
Being left behind because I was the baby.

Still, the sun shines even if we can’t see it. Taking off in rain and snow
We are surprised to find her shining
Faithful
Constant
Strong
High above the clouds.

So too, our spirits are still there
When bodies fail and tears fall.
And I will be able to feel your smile
Even when I can’t see it anymore.
Like the way I can hear it in your voice
Over the phone

We have followed many roads
Together
And apart
Parted many seas
Surveyed many vistas
All round our celestial home.

Now you are preparing
To lead on another journey
One I will make as surely as
The sun will rise.

I will look for your smile
And listen for your laugh
When I get there.

Jock, I'm so sorry to read this news. I don't get on the forum very often, found some time today. I have sat at the bedside of various people throughout my life, and watched them suffer in their final days. It's a blessing to have time to say your farewells, but heart-wrenching to watch the deterioration. I have witnessed them take their last breath and seen the peace that comes over them. It's truly amazing. I admire your sister's courage to make the choice she did and your family for the support you gave her. We never have enough time with our loved ones. Your poem was lovely. Stay safe and well. Hugs from Ohio!!

Heartwarming and sad; those emotions go together too well. Keep her close in your memories as your beautiful poem touched on. There are some wonderful sentiments here. Thank you for touching us with this.

Condolences from the South. I so often feel somewhat helpless on these occasions, but while we all recognize death is a part of life, the loss is still intensely personal.
Reach out if we can help.

I always find comfort in these words from Kahlil Gibran. I lost my brother many years ago in an airplane crash. I had the last three lines of this put on his headstone.

Dan

You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?

The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;
And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.

Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.
Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?
Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Thank you so much for your kind words and condolences. It has been a year and I still struggle with the loss of such a companion in life.

The poem from Dan is very similar to one I plan to have as my epitaph, from the writer Ursula K LeGuin:

" Only in silence the word;
Only in darkness, light;
Only in dying, life.

Bright the hawk's flight
On an empty sky"

Thank you all for being here to listen.
