Hi guys,
I just picked up a 2009 ST1300 and the SMC is in need of rebuild. I looked up the kit and this is the Part #: 45620-MCS-R02.
But thats not everything I need. Correct.? I need to get the front caliper rebuild kit as well I think.
Does anyone know of a complete rebuild kit I can buy.
Any advice is appreciated.
If anyone has a good used or rebuilt front calipers I may just get those.
Thanks ahead of time.

Looking casually through all SMC posts, I'll just say that those who choose to rebuild, usually end up having to replace the SMC as a unit.
The consensus here is, it's better and almost always more successful to buy a new SMC from the start.
You may end up saving yourself more in the end, than trying to save money with just the rebuild kit.
Either way... good luck.

1788129923019.jpegThe Caliper and the caliper bracket are two separate components. The caliper ‘holds’ the brake pads and it slides in and out on two slider pins - one on the caliper, one on the caliper bracket.

The caliper bracket houses the SMC - It is an integral part of the caliper bracket. It comes complete with the pushrod, piston, seals, spring already fitted.

Generally speaking the SMC will fail due to poor maintenance - the inside will have become corroded or gunged up due to not changing brake fluid and flushing out old fluid correctly or at the correct 2 year (max) intervals.

or

Parts have worn out. Seals have gone, or bore is damaged. If seals are worn, the chances are they the bore is damaged because the metal piston will have been scraping the insides.

Bottom line is - you might as well but the front left caliper bracket complete with the service kit fitted. You cannot buy it without.

You will need new copper washers or alloy washers - which are soft metal which crush to form the seal between brake lines and banjo bolts. You cannot reuse the old ones.

Unless you have specific problems with brake pistons moving, you do not need a new caliper. You may need new pistons and seals if the pistons are not smooth and shiny, but that is a different question.

I bought aftermarket caliper rebuild kits. Online company based in US.
Friendly great customer service, beautifully packaged with all the seal, boots, grease, nipple covers and bleeders.
Good price, low but not crazy low.
Never again.
The quality of the dust boots was inadequate. Does that mean the piston seals were low quality too?
If I recall right I used the old nipple cover too.

Honda doesn’t make a kit.
Look at the parts diagram and order all the rubber bits and the caliper slide pin if it is rough. There is a rubber ring that fits on that pin.

You may have gotten away with reusing crush washers in the past. Not a good idea. But when you get by once you might want to try again.
However, definitely do not use old crush washers on the SMC. It’s the biggest pain in the neck place to have a problem.

Even though I have rebuilt some SMCs a successfully I switched over to buying the whole new unit on the next bikes I bought.
Spending that money might sting for a minute but it makes the job easy and nothing to think about after that.

Hi fellows, its great to hear from all of you.
Thanks for all the advice.
I found this "https://www.partzilla.com/product/h...ltiTpcuyPryWnpQskOlQ7-eg5c6TnISRoCzTcQAvD_BwE" Is this the correct part?

This bike is not in the best of shapes so I was just trying to get it going for some short neighbourhood/parking lot taining and was reluctant to spend a lot of money on it. If I have to its OK but what do you guys think about getting a used caliper set?
Thanks again. I really enjoy this forum with all the knowledgable members.
Thanks
Omid
