That's interesting, I assumed that was not the case as Michelin makes a separate Road 6GT, but only in four sizes. This is exactly the same with the Michelin Road 6 (GT)

I had not had the Michelin on my list as their website returns no suitable tires when searching for the ST1300. Thanks for the info. The GT version is marketing. The Road 6 is exact the same as the GT version
Look for RS III's... if you can find them they are typically pretty cheap.. .running 2nd set on my RT.I am currently looking for new tires and I came across some information that I felt was good to share. I know many riders of heavier bikes that exclusively buy GT spec tires - currently this only includes the Bridgestone T32 in ST1300 sizes. I reached out to Dunlop about the Roadsmart IV, as they sell a GT spec and SP spec in Europe, but do not have that designation in North America.
Here was their response:
"Thank you for reaching out to Dunlop Motorcycle Tires. The Roadsmart IV available in North America is equivalent to the European GT version. The Roadsmart IV is suitable for a 2003 Honda ST 1300 and meets the requirements."
Perhaps this was well known, but I thought it would be good to share if anyone was scared off since the Roadsmart IV is not listed as GT spec.
A pair of Roadsmart IV's can be had for $163.95 (front) and $185.95 (rear) + tax and shipping in Canada (so CAD). They are quite an attractive choice at that price.
Because the rim is not large enough (width) you end up with a different profile for a 180 wide tire than it was designed for. It's very possible this difference is negligible going from 170 to 180, but there is a difference. The difference in circumference between a 180/55zr17 and a 170/60zr17 is -0.8% for the 180. I don't see what would be the problem in mounting one unless the swingarm clearance is too tight. I similarly oversized a rear tire on a V-Star 1300 to use Michelin Commander IIs to no Ill effect
remember that 10% better mileage of a 5000 mile tire is only 500 miles ( your mileage may vary) read the fine printLook for RS III's... if you can find them they are typically pretty cheap.. .running 2nd set on my RT.
GT spec tires haven't been out all that long, for years heavy bikes just used whatever...
Tire manufacturers kept introducing tires with 'increased mileage'... we should have 40,000 miles motorcycle tires based on all those yearly ads increasing mileage... lol....
not true GT versions have a stiffer sidewall Michelin calls it "Reinforced radial x technology" standard version uses "2CT+ Technology". Bridgestone Gt version uses (from what I remember) polyester and a rayon ply to stiffen the sidewall and 2 polyester ply sidewall on non gt version. The GT version is marketing. The Road 6 is exact the same as the GT version
I didn't dieBecause the rim is not large enough (width) you end up with a different profile for a 180 wide tire than it was designed for. It's very possible this difference is negligible going from 170 to 180, but there is a difference.
Thankfully. I'd be interested in what the 180 looks like in the 5" rim if you have a picture to share.I didn't die
