I have been a registered user at this site for probably close to 10 years, but I guess it's been long enough since I've access the sites that it's considering me a brand new user.

I have a 2008 ST1300, recently had an oil seal fail as I was getting engine oil into my coolant.

Replaced the bearing, impeller, oil seal, mechanical seal all using a press.

Unfortunately I don't know of a way of testing the integrity of the mechanical seal without assembling everything. Put everything back together and unfortunately the mechanical seal doesn't work because it's just constantly draining a steady stream out through the weep hole.

I don't have time right now to take it all apart, clean off the gasket, make sure the crank case covers are spotless again, and repress a new mechanical seal, I'm thinking about just plugging that weep hole tube for an upcoming trip of about 1000 miles and then fixing it later when I have more time.

What do you guys think of that?

Decided to just bite the bullet and take it to a custom shop to take off the front crank case cover and replace the mechanical seal again for me well I am out of town and hopefully done before I go on my trip

:)

Your mechanical seal, oil seal, impeller, and bearing, must be replaced as a complete unit.
Your not going to be able to take them apart and then replace them again.
If your shop does not know the proper depth to press the impeller in, they can cause more damage etc.
If YOU or Anyone else TOUCHES the mating surface of the white seal with your bare fingers, or a dirty glove, it will not seal!
You must wipe all surfaces clean with alcohol to make sure they are completely clean. Even the oil from a fingerprint can cause them to fail.
There is a good article on this in RED RIDER about mechanical seal failures in Honda's, and what was causing them, and how to prevent them.

Thank you, I wonder if I didn't quite get it down to 1 mm clearance. I'll ask him and replace it all as a set.
