New owner of 2009 ST1300A

Be on the lookout for a RTE not too far from you. Typically held in February in Anamosa. Not usually good riding weather (but it sometimes is) but a chance to meet some other folks on this list.
How does one find out about RTE’s (had to look up what that acronym stood for! 😂)
Have not thoroughly explored the depths of this forum yet to see if there are listing per state or region?

They will generally be announced on this site. On the top blue banner look under "Riding" and there are many events noted, including RTEs. We just had one In Orfordville WI a couple weeks ago. They are informal, and can pop up any time. You could organize one yourself. Just pick a date, time and place and post it. One of the members , now since passed on, started one in February in Anamosa, since there aren't many other opportunities to meet and greet at that time of year. Another has continued it.

Welcome to STOwners!

I believe there are “Regional” forums (fora?) listed in the home page and the events for each region are listed there.

You have chosen well as the ST1300 is a remarkably durable bike and a great ride. Advice: keep the oil clean and watch out for some issues which may begin to crop up as your bike is now 16-17 years old:

- Radiator hoses - I’d simply change them as they’re old.

- Front brake secondary master cylinder. I believe @jfheath wrote a great article on diagnosing and replacing this little thing-a-majig. A small, but vital component in your linked ABS braking system which, if it fails, will stop you cold.

- Clutch slave cylinder (CSC). Another small but vital component which seems to deteriorate at about the 12-15 year point (regardless of miles ridden).

Replacing the CSC is neither particularly hard nor expensive (~$100) but if it fails, your trip is stopped. I wrote a comprehensive article on diagnosing and replacing the CSC which is on this forum. Many STOwners have used it to replace the CSC in an hour or two.

Incidentally, your friendly local Honda dealer will charge way over $1000 to replace the CSC because they will follow the Honda shop manual method which has only three easy steps:
  1. Remove engine from frame (this a major task as the engine-transmission ass’y is very big & heavy)
  2. Replace CSC on rear engine case (three 6 mm bolts - 5-10 min. tops)
  3. Reinstall engine into frame (another major job which will take hours).
The method I describe does not involve removing the engine - sooooo much easier and less risky.

Other than that, the ST1300 is pretty much a bullet proof locomotive!

Cheers,

Pete
