Just received my order of OEM front brake pads, part no. 06455-MCS-G02. They include the silver coloured metal heat shields, which I understand should not be fitted to the ST1300. Do Honda include the shields because the same part number is used on other models? If they are not used on other models, any idea why they are included?

OEM Honda pads are thicker in the rear, and thinner in the front.
All pads should have the metal cage behind them.
Honda also has a white spacer between the pad backing plate and the cage to prevent the heat from cooking the fluid.
Some (like EBC) chose not to include one & decided to make one size fits all pads (front and rear the same)

General consensus is stick with the OEM pads, even if it's pricier. It will help prevent brake issues on a properly maintained system.

Everything supplied with OEM pads should be fitted.

The silver coloured plates are Not the heat shields. They are the anti squeal plates, or so i understand. They should be fitted front and back.

The heat shields are the thicker white pads that come with the rear pads. They should be fitted between the backing plate and the silver anti squeal plate on the back only.

If you fit the heat shield to the front pads, your rear brakes will drag, cos there isnt enough room in the caliper for them when pads are new, the front brakes can't release and the SMC activates and applies your rear brakes.

Thanks to all for the clarification. I will fit the pads and the anti squeal plates.

Every set of OEM rear brake pads I have ever bought have had the white pad already between the backing plate and the anti squeal plate.
I never had to physically put it between them. Not sure why you would have to fit them when they are already fitted???

Are they ? I had never noticed. Probably because the first thing I do is take things apart !

I am in the habit of greasing my backing plates and anti squeal plates. New bikes aren't supplied like that. The manual doesn't call for it. But I have always done it, and I can't remember what made me start. It seems wrong not to now. I used to use copper grease, but now use Ceratec which is made specifically for the purpose.

Some Honda cars specified Moly 60 for brake backing plates, but now M77 is the recommended substitute for this purpose - which is where I believe the spline confusion originates.
