Oil choice

Maybe they gave up and changed it, but their staff who replies to emails and phone calls don’t know yet :rofl1:

Rotella T6 and Rotella T4 use different containers.

Noted, but as I said, I have not seen a real bottle of t6 on a shelf that really had that picture on it.
And She’ll claims it does not exist etc.
Next time your in a store and can really touch one, take a picture of it, I would trust that more than pictures on line.

I have already posted a photo in this thread of the container of T6 that I purchased. Here it is again. I took this photo on June 7th 2023.

Confusing isn’t it? Taken 2 minutes ago.

The packaging just changed. No mystery. It's called marketing. Studies showed that a lot of motorcyclists were using the product and Shell responded.

is this oil goof for ST1300 ?

Besides lubricating, oil also helps with cooling (hence the cooling fins on the pan).

First move is trying to keep heat generation from friction to a minimum, using the lowest recommended viscosity. No need to go 40 when 30 suffices, oils have improved a lot.

Then use the oil with the best heat capacity and thermal conductivity for the job. These values varies between different motor oils, there is a range as illustrated here, some oils help cooling better than others:

Synthetic oil manufacturers of course claim synthetic has better cooling properties...but they are also not forthcoming with hard numbers.

But if you try different oils, chances are you will notice the difference in the heat generated by the Viffer. Maybe some here can help with their coolest choice....that unfortunately may not always be the one that will give you the smoothest shifting!

Just took this in Home Depot.

Well, it looks like I’ll be doing more clutch service stuff soon :rofl1:

I'm so glad Rotella put the pic of the MC on the bottle front. I feel warm and fuzzy now when I ride. Could be the Florida heat but I am on my third bottle with the pic on the front. All three still out in the garage waiting to be taken to the recycle tub.

I'd go out in the garage and line them up for a pic but......

They have always said JASO DH-2 JASO MA/MA2 but as noted many times before, it's just what the bottle says not a paid JASO advertisement....er paid for certification.

444 miles of clutch testing today after Sundays fresh oil change and it's still clutching fine!

Just for the sake of clarity for those that are reading this oil thread for the first time, NONE of the Shell products mentioned in the above posts are JASO MA certified. NONE!

My bad, there is one that is certified. The Shell Advance 4T AX7.

Glad to hear it Raymond. My friend has a Suzuki and is trying it.

Got a link to that certification?

thanks for the link. I was looking a couple weeks ago and could only find like a 2014 table.

One of the reasons I was looking back then was for the Royal Purple Max-Cycle oil. It says certified but I don't see it in the list.

"Max-Cycle meets or exceeds API requirements and is rated JASO MA2,"

hey I really started a university lecture on oils here, this really makes the forum a class act. I just wanted to know what oil to get for the bike hahaha!!
Anyone coming along finding this now are going to be amazed at the professors in here.
