My ST1300 currently has 10w 30 Honda GN4 oil in it. I'm about due for a change and want to put 10w 40 in it because we get temp ranges over 100 degrees here in the summer. Accirdi g to the service manual when you do an oil and filter change on the ST, there is still close to a quart of oil left in the bike after draining. If I refill with 10w 40, or synthetic. . . Will this cause any issues?

Absolutely not.

Just don't use any oil that says "energy conserving" on the label.

Ok, I read one article that says to pull the plug wires and run the starter motor for 2 seconds to push out the last of the oil. . .sounds scary. . . .

I wouldn't do that. You will never get it all out and it is no big deal.

You won't have any issues, provided you do not use an energy conserving labeled oil. It is absolutely OK to mix oil weights. I estimate that replacing your 30 weight with 40 weight oil will yield a 38 weight oil. So it's basically a non-issue, as far as the oil weight goes. As for synthetic or conventional oil, that's entirely up to you. And, yes, you can mix the two.

+1 I used to do that when the bikes' kill switches didn't kill the starter. No need to pull plug wires back then.

But I didn't get much out and if done a little too long you risk damaging the cylinder walls. It just wasn't worth the effort for little return that really doesn't make any difference. (Never mind the potential for mechanical damage.)

If I were to believe it somehow made a difference I'd just change the oil a little more frequently.

On a side note I had no idea that after draining the oil there is still nearly a quart of the old stuff left behind.

Yep, service manual says 4.1 quarts after oil and filter change. . Total capacity is 5 quarts

+ 3 or 4, the mix is fine, but perhaps do another change sooner than normal.
Do not, do not turn it over without oil pressure. Not a good idea.

10W40 is perfectly fine as is 10w30 in 100+ temps. Oils mix just fine.

Honda recommended 10w40 in 2002 to 2006 ST1300s. The recommendation to 10w30 started with 2007 models.

Go to Walmart and get a gallon of Shell Rotella T6 5w40. Go home and drain your oil, change the filter, pour the jug of T6 in and you are done.

Good job Ray! The OP made no mention of brand recommendations, just a simple oil change question, but now you have likely opened the flood gates for all who feel they use the best oil - and you know how we all feel about oil threads in general. :(

True words here. One gallon is all it takes for a ST1300 oil and filter change. I run this oil in all my liquid cooled, wet clutch bikes.
 
The latest formulation of Rotella 5w40 is no longer certified or recommended for gasoline engine use. So much for reading the label on the back of the jug.
