It seems that the two schools of thought are the bar-end locks and the "license plate" lock. I'd be inclined to use the license plate lock under the top box, as I have read many of you have done. I have two questions. First, if you mount it under the top box, can it stay in place if the top box is taken off? Second, if I do a bar end lock, does that take away my ability to use a throttle lock like the throttlemeister?

Another option is a light cable lock. Run it through the face plate if you have a full face helmet so crooks can't just cut the chin strap to get it.

What a lot of people have done for this is the short gun cable locks. If you are not into guns maybe someone you know is. I know I used to have a bunch of them but I gave them away. I have no real use for them as I have one of the big gun safes where my stuff is kept.

As for the bar end option, I think you are right that you wouldn't be able to do the throttlemeister.

As for the license plate mount. If you don't bolt them to the top box it shouldn't matter. I have seen where some people have bolted them to the top box so then if you took that off you are right it would come off also. If you mounted it to the rear fender it would have nothing to do with the top box. An added benefit is that if mounted in this location it offers a little more rain protection. If you had your helmets out there and a light rain came through I don't think the inside of the helmet would get as wet as it would with the bar end option.

I think that the Guardian mounted to the plate frame allows the helmet to drag against an exhaust pipe, not good if hot.

Some good info in this thread. https://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76791
See post #13 for pictures of my install - under the top box mounting plate. A good solution, IMO, but there's some other good ideas there too

+1...carry a cable lock with me at all times.

I've got my Helmet Guardian mounted under the tail rack I bought from Premier Cycle Accessories. It works well there. But only if you have the tail rack from them!

Gun cable lock. Like others here, I just set my helmet on the passenger seat and run the lock through the helmet face bar and one of the passenger grab handles.

And, the lock was free (with purchase of something that goes "bang")! :D

Actually I forgot that you can get them a lot of times for free from Police Departments. You can check your local or county Sheriff's Department. I know they were doing a giveaway a while back here.

The last time I got some was at a Gander Mountain. They gave me 20 or so of them because I made a large purchase there. I told them I really didn't need them. You see my large purchase was my gun safe. I gave them to family members that don't have safes.

I go with the short cable unless it's just a quick trip. Then I use a small padlock and my front brake lever. The padlock will lock over the lever with the D ring in it, but will not slip over the ball on the end of the lever.

Many police and sheriffs depts. give them away.

I use a long shackle padlock through the luggage plate under my Givi. I drilled a hole in the plate on each side where they hang out of the way and are easy to get to.I painted them to match the bike so they are not too obtrusive.Keyed alike they are always there and easy to use.

Lots of way to mount the Helmet Guardian, under the topbox is the best I have found.

Topbox mount then bolts on top of it!

I tried the Helmet Guardian behind the license plate, but my helmet rested against the dirty fender and hot exhaust pipe.

I bolted it to the mounting plate under my Hondaline Top Box, and it is a much, much better location.

Here are a few pics of my homemade steel bracket.
