I wear an armored "Sliders All Weather Mesh Jacket" here in Florida YEAR ROUND. The jacket serves me well, but after four years the HI VIS NEON YELLOW had faded to the point that It was either buy a new jacket of the same color or, do something about it. I came up with the crazy idea that I could paint it. To this end, with my crafted wife's help, I bought some "Americana Neon Yellow Paint and mixed it with the same brand "FABRIC MEDIUM" at the prescribed ratio of two parts paint to one part "Fabric Medium". I mixed it in small batches ( tablespoon, or so" and applied it with cheap brushes of two different sizes ( smaller for cutting in around the black portions of the jacket) and larger for the totally yellow portions of the jacket. I worked the paint slowly to keep from clogging the mesh pores and viola, an almost NEW JACKET at the total cost of about ten bucks. I wetted a towel and tried to scrip the paint off and it held up perfectly. I have "Sliders" Hi Vis Gloves and the paint job on the jacket matches exactly.

Bottom line, if you want to nave your HI VIS JACKET, this is a viable way to save some bucks that can be used for whatever.

LOL. I never would have thought of painting clothes. Good on ya'.

The concern I'd have is the integrity of the stitching and material after enough time in the sun to fade it.

I actually was wondering today if I could some how re dye my black mesh riding jacket and pants which have faded to a purplish black color. Even googled it. Didn't seem really doable. One post talked about having to heat the material before acid dying it. Some one else question the integrity of the material if it had faded so much and what the dying process might do to it. I decided to either leave it alone or get new gear but i would be interested to hear if any body else has tried re dying/painting their old gear. I know they sell fabric dye/paint for luggage/outdoor furniture but I'm not sure it would be suitable for clothing.

Someone on the site dyed their hi-vis before. I tried a search but didn't find it.

The problem with synthetics is they don't take dye...color is built into the thread when it's made.....paint might work for a little while, but I too would wonder how strong the seams would be in a garment that old........................good luck......ff

After having black hands from dye leaching out of gloves that have been soaked after an extended ride not sure I really want my body to look like a high vis lemon.

Cheers,

My problem is a bit the opposite. The bright neon yellow on my chest is reflected in the instrument cover and makes to hard to see the the speedo and tach.

I'm thinking of trying some matte black Krylon spray paint just on the part that I see in the instrument cover reflection.

Anyone tried this?

I wouldn't be concerned about the paint coming off, I'd be concerned about the effects the paint had on the material. Some solvents in paint can damage plastics, nylon, and other materials. Even high quality materials can be damaged by harsh solvents. I'd hate to make the jacket weaker while trying to make it safer.
