Parking Brake Mod

I wrote a fairly detailed report on this device a few years ago - here is the link to it:

Tony Worrall's "Pendle Parking Brake" for the ST 1300

There are also about 3 additional pages of comments and discussion about this product on that thread.

You don't actually drill a 'hole' - you drill a 4 mm deep dimple into the 18 mm thick boss of the brake lever.

Slightly different version for the 1100, but it works GREAT! Never thought I needed one for years, until I got one and found it useful on a number of occasions.

I park the bike in gear whenever there's a situation where it might roll while parked, works for me.

Yeah, been doing that for years, but the Pendle brake adds something that I couldn't do before. For the odd occasion where I have had to stop on an incline, had to have both feet down being stopped on a slippy surface, like gravel, or side of a road, wanting to check a map, or clean my glasses, blow my nose, whatever, I couldn't do this without stopping and getting off of the bike.

With the Pendle, both hands are free to do their work.

I love mine. +1 to everything Bush said (except its hard to blow your nose w/ gloves and a helmet)!

I have one for both of my STs you don’t realize how much you can use it until you have one they are great and Tiny is a great guy to deal with.

On the odd occasion that this might occur, putting it in first or second gear and hitting the kill switch has always worked for me. Or better yet, find a level parking lot at a bar and have a cold beer while reading the map.

Ok thanks for the feedback guys, I just bought me one (there’s 3 versions: older ST, newer ST 2009+, ST1100)

For me the issue is when I need to leave the engine and lights running and it’s a down hill incline

Excellent write up CYYJ (what does that name mean)

I’m used to those starting with a “K”, like: KNCO where I hang out
Was betting on it was his HAM callsign

I love my Pendle Brake!!!!

I will willfully admit to forgetting it was on and trying to take off. The front end can dive quite a bit.... more than you'ld think....

I keep a heavy duty rubber band in the fairing glove box for those rare occasions when I want to lock the front wheel. Ferries are a good example because, even in gear, the bike can move a little bit to and fro.

The rubber band is actually a section of an old bicycle tube. Since I also ride a bicycle, tubes are easy to come by. If you don't, just stop by any bicycle shop and ask for an old tube. They throw them out so they're happy to give them away.

I have had mine on my 03 for several years and there is no weakening of the brake lever. There have been no failures and I don't see what it has to do with insurance. If insurance needs to be notified then you should notify them for every mod you make on the bike.

The concerns of the set dimple are valid ones, it was mine as well. But the picture in the review shows it to be quite shallow and not likely compromising the levers integrity. As for mods that one might consider sharing with insurance guys, sheeeeet... I ride a STP which by definition is a rolling mod. This is the least of mine.

Besides, it’s British and kewl and Tony is actually Q from Mi-6.

+1 I'd like to see any evidence, something beyond suggestion the dimple affects structural integrity. It's a worry I suppose until it's not.

As for insurance purposes, every electrical farkle added could be considered a potential point of failure and threat to the whole bike. Could be not that it actually is. Every structural mod not done by a certified/licensed mechanic is also suspect. But if any are reported it's because it's required for coverage for the additions.

I've found the brake to be a useful reliable worthwhile addition. If somebody else doesn't it's a choice.

I still don't think I'd fit one even with a dimple - it would niggle at me.
I was working in the aircraft industry at the time I fitted mine (aircraft test pilot). I asked a couple of the structural & fatigue engineering specialists I work with what they thought the impact of drilling the dimple in the lever would be.

Their comment was "Honda drilled a gigantic hole at the inboard end of the lever [the pivot point of the brake lever] and they are not concerned about it - you're putting the dimple in the widest [front to rear] section of the lever - don't worry about it."
