Planning on a Sena SMH10, a few questions...

From one Paul to another,

I pulled the trigger two weeks ago on a Sena SMH10 standard configuration because I use a modular helmet. Decided to go with the Sena a week after I purchased a new Nolan N90 at the Iron Pony.

When I received the unit I was really surprised with the quality (think Apple like quality). And one other point, the Sena will mount on a Nolan helmet with the help of a Dremel tool.

Yes the unit does have the 3.5 jack for another input .

Thanks Paul. Since you got the standard configuration, do you have any trouble with the mic reaching your mouth? Doesn't look long enough to wrap under the helmet.

I went for the standard unit because I do not have much faith with stick on units.
The mike boom is long enough. I mounted two units. One on a Nolan N90 and the other on a Vega Summit, both are modular helmets. The Bezel on the bottom of the Vega is 10 mm thick at point of attachment so that the supplied clamp will work without any modifications. The Nolan has a 20.2 mm wide bezel at the point of attachment so I cut a slot in the black hard plastic to allow the factory clamp to slip on the helmet. It works great. I have found when talking on the phone that the other party reports best sound when the mike is resting on my chin and not in front of my lips. (when my son arrives home I will have him assist me in loading pictures) I am only computer literate when my boys are home.

I don't think they sell the earphone adapter as part of the kit.
You buy a separate helmet clamp, it can have either the universal or the boom mic.
But I don't think they sell it as part of a kit. It's like $30 or $50 all by itself.

One more question... does the unit have a ?3.5mm earphone jack in case I want to use my own earphones sometime? I've seen some info to indicate it does but nothing "official".

Sena has added a combination speaker/earphone jack clamp (SMH-A0306). It allows you to switch between using earbuds and speakers without changing the clamp.

I use ear buds and plug them into the unit. My tunes are blue tooth from my Garmin.
You can use ear bids, no problem.

Are you using the the SMH-A0305 or SMH-A0306 accessory to allow this?
 
I have had the original non flashable smh10 dual set for going on 5 years no. My wife has a modular helmet and I have a shoei qwest. Both have the boom mics, which we have found works well as you can move the mic very close to your lips which really helps in comm fidelity and reduces noise. They pair well to iphone 5c, ipod touch, ipad from my experience. I get about 8 hours with steady tunes playing, way more if just comm mode. We have turned off the vox feature as it just seems glitchy and just use the manual push to talk method. The biggest annoyance with the units is the few second delay from when you push to talk and the actual comm channel opens. I wish they would fix this - maybe they have in the new 20s. Also I have found that if I run the battery right down and plug in the cigarette charger on the bike, I have to leave the unit powered down for about 1/2 hour to recharge slightly before carrying on - seems the unit can't charge from dead and be powered on at same time. My shoei qwest i used the clamp mount - no problems, and on my wifes AGV Migula modular, I used the stick-on, also no problems to date. I think the music sound quality is actually better while wearing earplugs - wierd but true....
That's my take on them and I am still happy I chose the Sena's.

  3. I assume the sticky back that holds the unit on the helmet works well and lasts?

I'm sorry, I have been away from my helmet all winter and I have CRS. Been doing it long enough I forgot how I got there.
On one helmet I scabbed a plug onto the speaker wires when I couldn't get the speakers in the right place. I later got a replacement clamp that is made for ear buds. Rather than speaker wires, it has a 1/8 female. I would go that rout if I were you. You can get the clamp and mic separately and it is not that expensive.
The hard rubber that is supposed to be the strain relief will break if you don't reinforce it. I used RTV.
 
Well, I just ordered the Sena SMH10-11D from Motorcycle Dave (nice guy). Looking forward to it and hope to write up a review after I've used it for a while. Plan on mounting one to my modular and one to my wife's full face.

EDIT: Disregard. I just took a close look at what I have. The speakers don't disconnect. They're hard wired in to the clamp. Guess I need to buy the SMH-A0306. Darn.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if the earbud adapter cable (the coiled one) that comes with the SMH-A0306 helmet clamp kit can be purchased separately. I have the SMH10 with the universal kit, so I don't need another set of speakers and microphones. But it looks like the earbud cord just plugs into the speaker connector, so if I had the cord, I could use earbuds, right?
