I'm trying to help my dad get his 1991 ST1100 fixed. He was at a stop sign just below the crest of a step hill, and when he went to go, something broke and the motorcycle started to roll backwards. He got the motorcycle down the hill and limped it home in 2nd and 3rd gear. 1st gear won't engage anymore, and he says there's a hollow sound that want there before.

We've been unable to find a mechanic who will look at it. If it's the transmission needs work would it be best to just replace the engine? I think we could handle an engine swap.

Thanks in advance.

Very unusual as ST1100 transmissions seldom fail.
I don't know if you can swap them out with the engine in the frame or not.
But swapping them is not a big deal with the engine out if the engine is still running fine.

Do you mean that swapping the transmission once the engine is out is not a big deal? I figured I'd have to take the engine out either way, so I was wondering if I should just do a full swap, so I don't have to spend time poking around.

IIRC, it's about 5 bolts and comes off in one unit.
Got one sitting in my garage right now that I removed.

I have a spare transmission if you need it
