Progressive Motorcycle Insurance

I just got a lovely letter from Progressive and Flo that they would not be renewing the motorcycle policies on my 3 ST1100s.
They said because I had filled 2 claims I was done.
Never mind that I have been paying premiums close to 30 years (since 1996) and never failed a claim up to this time.
Never mind that one of the claims was in June from a deer strike that I could not have avoided.
Never mind that the other one in November was where a woman on a cell phone hit me as I pulled away from a gas pump and Progressive rolled over and paid them after I explained what happened - and I did protest it.
I remember someone else on the board has had the same experience with them.
So I guess their 'insurance' is only good for two claims then they throw you under the bus - regardless of how long you have been a paying customer.
I have appealed it to a 'higher' level but I will be surprised if they change their mind.
So just beware - if you have them for coverage, you only get two strikes - whether it is your fault or not - and you're out!

But of course - when you exceed the revenue stream for premiums, they figure your odds are not in their favor. Kinda like horse racing. Try allstate mr mayhem might cover ya

I was the one they did it to when I hit two deer in a single year, even though that is covered under 'Comprehensive.' They said the policy is 2 claims within 36 months regardless of fault.

Progressive is very heavily data driven. And they are very good at it. That campaign where they would give you their price and the other prices wasn't a gesture. They knew they were better at assessing risk than the other companies, so they were stacking the deck; picking the desirable risks and pushing the others to their competitors. All companies use modeling now, but Progressive is obsessive about it.

I wouldn't recommend Allstate unless you're just looking at liability. They use ACV for motorcycles, so with an older bike you're guaranteed a total loss and a low payout.

Awful news to hear, UP. Hmm, I've had Progressive for, gosh, as long as I've owned my current ST. I've filed exactly ONE claim with them when I laid it down way back in 2018. They initially tried to total it, but ended up negotiating a non-totalable amount that got me enough to rebuild it while preventing a SALVAGE title. If the two-in-36-month policy is true, I'm hopefully okay for the near term but good to know...don't plan on wrecking twice (no one ever PLANS a wreck, right?). Wish I could offer an alternative. GL. Keep us informed!

Age and 3 year history Collecting premiums for years and not paying out claims are main concerns for insurance.
There - fixed it for you ... ;)

I have State Farm... for decades.... bundle house/car/motorcycles together.... no complaints and cheap(at least for me)
I admit, havent filed any claims....My agent says I am on the "no termination" list

I will post as soon as I know something.
The thing that really bothers me is you can pay premiums like me for 30 years, have two claims - neither of which are your fault - and they non-renew you just like that. So what you are really paying for is a policy with a 2 claim limit. That is something to be really aware of.

Ah, there's the rub - all the insurance companies love folks like you - all pay ins, no pay outs.
Why I was a 'Platinum' Progressive customer - until I used it. ;)
Sadly you don't really know what kind of insurance you really have until you have to file a claim and what the aftermath will be.

How about Dairyland - any experience with them out there over the long term (including claims)?
Yes I have been with Dairy land for over 41 years except for the two years I was in Hawaii. For me they have been an excellent company. Had a claim in for my 1982 V-45 Sabre back in 85, four months after I bought it. (over 2k dollars) My fault, locked up the front brakes and fell down in the middle of Denver. Second claim was in 2012 with my NT700. Locked up the front brakes in a pavement rut and went down on top of Loveland Pass. (over 3k dollars) . They came to the house and inspected the bike with me and found more dings and scratches than I had. Third time was 2019 with my Big Versys 1000 SE. Hit a hole in the road and bent the rim. They paid me a new rim which I had the old one repaired by Woody's Wheel Works here in Denver for 200 bucks and a new axel and tire, wheel bearings and shop labor to replace. Tire and axel , bearings were fine. Never had them replaced. (over 3 K dollars) Today I am paying for the 2025 NT1100 full coverage and just liability on the 2014 FJR and the 2013 V-STrom. $380.00 a year. Yes I know everybody is different with insurance cost. But I have been pleased with customer service via phone, on line or text. All excellent in my case.

ALL insurance companies are data driven......that's what actuaries do......look at data and assess risk.

Good luck UP. It happened to me with my homeowner's insurance with Allstate. Dropped me like a rock after I filed a claim.

I have to keep reminding myself that insurances companies are in it for maximizing their profits not taking care of the policy holders ... :doh1:

Chuck - Thanks for your input on Dairyland - I'm working on a quote with them right now.
I'm also looking at Farm Bureau as I have my house and auto policies with them.
Even if Progressive decides to renew me at this point, I don't know that I would use them - 'burnt child fears the fire'! ;)

I've had two incidents a couple of years apart, with Progressive. One incident on each bike. One was not my fault, the other was hitting "gravel" in a corner.

They covered both incidents, no questions asked.

Both of mine were covered with no issue, as well. But when my policy was up, they declined to renew. It was about 10 months later.

I am aware, that's why I said all companies use modeling now. And it's far beyond what actuary was 40 or even 20 years ago and far more intrusive. The lawsuit against allstate for buying customers driving data from 3rd parties is just the tip of the iceberg.
EDIT: Not to mention 'unrelated' information being used. You credit score is a big factor in your rate and has been for years. But now they're buying all the data they can get. And correlating.

When we had a minor auto accident I asked our (highly recommended) body shop what insurance companies they preferred. I had a list of 'good' companies from consumer reports and a couple of other websites. Surprisingly, the highly rated companies nickle and dimed, delayed payperwork, or were otherwise bears to deal with. IIrc, State Farm was considered by the shop to be very fair in dealing with them (esp in covering unforeseen repairs). We had NJM (New Jersey Manufactureres) insurance but they raised our rates after the one accident. We now have Erie insurance. Both companies covered our cars and motorcycles. Before those two I had Progressive, but my agent lied to me and I will not pay someone to lie. Dumped them in a hurry.
