Question for the gear heads-4 into1 exhaust

Re: Question for the gear heads

Never heard of it, but considering how the ST looks with the bags off.... ......not a bad idea.

I'll be watching this thread.

Re: Question for the gear heads

If the 1300 is anything like the 1100, it already has a 4 into 1 (at the collector in front of the rear wheel) then splits into 2 exhaust cans to get enuff volume to reduce the volume, if ya know what I mean. :D

An open pipe ST sounds like a harsh small block Chevy. In my experience, tho, all mufflers make it sound like an irrigation pump, some just louder than others. Quiet is best.

I was thinking more down the looks department....but yes, quiet is best.

It's just my opinion but, I've always prefered a more symmetrical look to my bike. Single-sided exhausts always look lop-sided to me. Obviously lots of people don't feel the same though

Back to the original question, tho. How about a flat under-the-sump muffler like a Buell, with all 4 headers dumping into it. One outlet (just ahead of and to the right or left of the rear wheel.) No visible mufflers on either side.

I personally don't like the looks of the triangular muffler on the 1300.

George,

Not sure about the ST1100 but the ST1300 is really a 2 into 1 on each side with a balance pipe between the collectors and the mufflers. The balance pipes help increase torque and it tends to help quiet down the exhaust as well.

At least that's the way I understand it works.

+1 to this. Twin cans is the way to go.

Given the uneven firing sequence of a V-4, I'm not sure a 4 into 1 exhaust would give any performance advantage. The reflected wave on some cylinders will be out of phase...or am I wrong here?

I'll look at the 1300 collector on Saturday. The 1100 does 2 into on each bank then those 2 into 1 at the collector under the sump and splits again into 2 for the 2 mufflers.

I think to reach the required sound levels for an OEM bike and not reduce performance, a single muffler would have to be quite large. Look at the monstrosity hanging off the side of the Concours 14! Saw a C14 at the Rock Store a couple of weeks ago. I thought that can looked big when the bike was parked but it looks even more awkward with the bike maneuvering about. I don't want a wart like that on my ST!

I agree, Jeff. The muffler on the big Yamaha power cruiser is like that, too. Of course, those never stay on.

I agree with the comment about the stock triangle shaped exhaust. Despite the looks of the triangle canisters the main problem for me was heat.

I don't think the ST would look good with one pipe. A bike like the ST needs the balanced look of twin pipes. Save the one pipe look for the sport bikes.

Then again twin pipes always look better.

I love the looks of my Staintunes. To me they are the best with the good looks of twin pipes, cooler running, less weight and a nice healthy growl without being obnoxious or attracting unwanted attention (restrictors in place)

Would not go to one cannister or stock exhaust.

IMO the new Connie would look real nice with an exhaust like a Blackbird, Hyabusa or FJR 1300. :04biker:

Here is the ST1300 layout:

What kind of coating is that? Do it yourself or did you have it sent out? Does it make a difference in the amount of heat generated?

Pete,
I'm pretty sure those are the ceramic coated pipes offered by iride.. check out this thread in the For Sale section: linky. There is another newer ad/thread in the same section.

Hth,
Matt
