Really bad neck pain

Thought I'd throw this one out to the forum and see what the consensus is...

Lately on the last several rides on my ST, I've got some very serious neck and shoulder pain in about 15 minutes of riding. I have the MCL 1st gen. risers on the bike. Wanted to get my seat Spencerized, but no go..because the previous owner had it cut down. It's so intense that it's put the kabosh on the last two rides that I had planned for the day.

I had alot of the same pain back in Feb/Mar when I was doing alot of computer work on a sub-par desk and chair, and by the end of the day it was time for 500 mg ibuprofen to end the pain. This went on for about 2 weeks, before my complaining got me a new desk and chair, but I think some damage was done.

Now, though I only get pain when I ride. But I'm seriously considering seeing a chiropractor. I don't remember ever having pain like this riding my HD Electra Glide before.

I need some suggestions from the group. I really like the ST, but can't keep riding it like this. What do you guys think ?....riding posture, injury ? I'll listen to anything at this point.

thanks...

Good Idea to see a chiro or Doc, its probably some sort of RSI from the computer that manifests itself when sitting in cerain positions on the bike.

Or, take the wallet out of the back pocket and put it in the front...

See the doc...could be a pinched nerve aggravated by riding... Have it checked out before you cause damage that may take you away from riding for too long....;)

+1 on the Dr. Also try moving your thumbs to the top of the grips. This will move you arm position and shoulders. LD rider trick to relieve tension.

IN the meantime, try taking an Ibuprofen an hour before your ride, make a conscious effort to drop your elbows, relax your grip and lean forward slightly.

I think this may help as these pains can also be caused by tensing up when riding.......

I require at least 2 chiro tune-ups a yr one at the begining of the season and one at the end.

Obviously, it works as some people swear by it. I've never been to a chiropractor and have always been made to beleive that they are "witch-doctors" for lack of a better word. I'm willing to give it a try, though.

Make sure you are riding on the balls of your feet. This engages the muscles in your legs (they act as springs), which in turn engages your stomach and lower back muscles to support your torso. This relieves the pressure on your hands, arms, and shoulders. ps Loose on the bars no death grip...

See a specialist not a chiropractor. I've got neck issues as well and also just had a friend that had surgery on his neck. According to him he is better than new.

Chiropractors are specialists. Just not specialists in drugs and surgery. ;)

Based upon how you describe your problem, a good chiropractor should be able to help.

The key is finding a good chiropractor. One of the best ways to find a good chiropractor is to ask your friends and family.

Good luck getting your neck troubles fixed....feel free to drop me a PM if you have any questions.

you try keeping your head pointed down a bit instead of keeping it leveled to the horizon? I got some neck pain from doing that till it was pointed out. its like walking around looking up. so when your on the bike keep your head pointed towards the dashboard of the bike and look to the horizon and it might help releave you of some of the pain. you can try chiro or alternatively you could try acupuncture.

You have the best riding posture of any one I've seen ride- so I doubt that's the issue. If you want to borrow my seat or windscreen for a few days just let me know. I'm not doing any riding right now.

I've gone to a few bone crackers around here if you want a recommendation.

I was raised being taught they were witch doctors, but the relief I have gotten has been worth overcoming my skepticism.

I went to quackopractors for while. There may be good ones but in my experience, they just set you up for continueous visits. I'd see a spine guy and get an MRI, to make sure there isn't something more serious going on that no amount of "manipulation" can fix.
